    Looking for some help here!

Just bought a PS3 and was looking forward to playing uncharted 2.

First, I find that the PS3 does not come with a high def capable cable (not even VGA or DVI) for my 24" Dell monitor. So I sourced a component av cable from Tesco and try that.

It works but the picture is sh!te looking. I've changed the display settings to 1080i and component. But the image I'm getting is low-quality, with severe double imaging (see pic), lots of static "noise" and jaggies everywhere. Nowhere near the level I see playing my Xbox 360. Something must be wrong.

    Any ideas?

How can I get the clean, crystal clear image I'm supposed to? My monitor is full HD but does not have HDMI.

Try 720p (if you can do it over component?) ...otherwise use a lower res.

On my TV 1080i looks terrible (over HMDI), but 720p is great :)

720P has improved the resolution and the noise alright, but I still have that awful purple ghosting/banding on everything.

Is it possible to do HDMI-DVI? Would that give me a clear true 1080 signal?

Yep, you can do it with a HDMI->DVI cable. However you will need your TV to support DVI-D (digitial DVI) and HDCP (digitial content copy protection).

Any new-ish TV will support these. If your TV is >4 years old it'd be best to check it online. If your TV was advertised as HD-Ready, you're probably ok I think :)

What's the model of the monitor?
Monitors with component in are rare these days - it could be something wrong with it or even the cable. Do you connect directly to the monitor?
Also monitors tend to not like interlaced resolutions either - computer displays tend to be high refresh rate anyway.

Personally - I'd do as tony suggests and get a HDMI-DVI cable. They can cost a bit so shop around. If you're doing less then 3m don't spend too much. Then you'll need to use another means to get the audio out.

Cheers all I got it sorted.

Bought a HDMI cable and HDMI-dual link DVI-D adapter. The screen looks fantastic now at 1080p, the way it's meant to be played.

My monitor is the Dell 2407wfp, and apparently the component inputs are notoriously bad. I have the sound working through another adapter.

Now to find a DVI switch so I don't have to keep changing DVI cables everytime I want to use my PC!

    good stuff...
Maplin used to do a good DVI switch, but I think they've switched to all HDMI now :(
    Worth checking out though.

Just have to update this to say Uncharted 2 is INCREDIBLE. Definitely a reason to own a PS3. The graphics are some of the best I've ever seen in a game, and I'm a PC gamer. The lighting and textures are some of the most realistic I've yet seen, particularly in the smaller levels (underground in nepal) where there are some very high-res textures (for a console).

I am highly impressed with the graphical capability of the PS3, it seems ahead of the xbox 360 in this regard. Not to mention the fantastic story, script and gameplay.

Its the best Movie you'll ever play.

PS3 has serious graphical power but few developers are getting the most out of it, hopefuly that will change over the next year or two.
