Hi all i am in the market for a new Tv i am trying to get the best one for budget of €1000.At the moment from my limited knowledege the contrast ratio and scanning frequency seem to be the things to look out after the usual hd,hd ready etc I am looking at an LG or a Samsung 42" on piximania at the moment (just looking using them as a guide) both have 200hz motionflow technology which seem to be the best out there at the moment at that size. any other reccommendations around this price range and also am i assuming these are the only other things to look out for incorrect?

The motion flow and high 200hz refresh rates are aimed at minimising the problem LCDs have with trying to render fast motions on the screen and for rendering a flicker free and smooth image. LCD pixels have a slow response time compared with CRT tubes or plasma and this can lead to fast movement on the screen seeming to trail or blur. This can be a problem if you like to watch sports involving fast actions.

I would strongly urge that you also consider full HD plasma TVs made by Panasonic. They also have very high scan rates, 600hz I think, and their response rate is extremely rapid so there is no problem with fast moving images. They also have a wider viewing angle than LCD and better contrast ratios. They may also be cheaper than LCD for a given size.

It is a good idea to consider connectivity with other devices and make sure any set you choose has an adequate number and variety of HDMI, scart, optical and RGB connectors for all the peripheral devices you may wish to connect to the set like games consoles, DVD/Bluray players, satellite receivers and home theatre amps.

I have always found 200HZ image processing quite disconcerting, giving the image a unnatural movement to it.
Echoing concubi's comments the 600HZ effect from Panasonic's plasmas is far more natural and just as realistic as a side by side. (LCD being the sharper image)
Panasonic are releasing a "V" series for Ireland in the next little while so keep an eye out for it if you want a good LCD runner.
