Not sure if this has been asked before, but my searches haven't turned anything up. Does anyone out there know if it would be possible to expand memory on an NTL DVR? Any input would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks

No, the DVR will not recognise an external hard drive.

Is there anyway to expand memory in it? i think i read somewhere that the tivo DVR has another hard-drive port in it to expand the memory

The only way is physically swopping the hard drive in the unit itself with a bigger one, unfortunately!

Awesome, thanks. any idea what the standard size is in the dvr, just so i can get an idea of whether or not it would be worth my while looking into.

Which you a) aren't allowed to do seeing as the unit belongs to UPC and not you and b) there's no guarantee it'll work straight away anyway (drive needs to be formatted / initialized somehow probably).

It's a 160GB Maxtor PATA drive (I took my old one apart once out of curiosity, but it had died completely and was due to be replaced anyway), but like I said, probably no point.

They have 160GB hard drives in them.
The silver DVR has a S-ATA drive, not 100% on the black DVR but imagine it'd be the same.
Be warned though, there may be a limit to the size of hard drive the DVR will recognise or accept eg. Sky+ boxes will not initialise hard drives larger than 500GB.

So is there any way to keep recordings when you run out of space?

For example, is it possible to transfer recorded programmes to a DVD/HDD Recorder? That would also be useful to edit out ads etc.

Mine didn't, it was standard PATA, and I can guarantee that 100%.

You'll have to record them via the video out ports, composite video quality unfortunately, but loss is not too bad. Most DVD/HDD recorders can do this.
Also, a PC with a PCTV card with comp video in will do the job.

Loads of free SW out there to to do the encoding, VLC will work great.
You'll have to "play" the recorded program on the UPC DVR, then record it on the DVD/HDD recorder or PC.
