This is purely anecdotal but the delivery driver where i work called in the other day and we were chatting phones. he's on meteor bill pay and he said he got a call from meteor CC regarding his upgrade and was offered an iphone, was told they'll be doing it in a months time.

first i've heard of this, anyone else heard anything?

Haven't heard a thing, 3 recently said they were getting it this year i'd presume there waiting for the iphone HD, don't know why meteor would release the 3GS when there's another iphone just around the corner.

Not heard a thing about this. They seem to be going with HTC as they have two of the high spec range at the moment (Hero and Legend)

Vodafone made a big fuss months before they got the iPhone, im sure Meteor would be the same. ie. you would find out if it was comming months in advance, not just a months notice imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,696 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

    Vodafone did it!

What they didn't do was bring some competition to the Market, I'm holding off on my upgrade in the hope 3 or meteor bring some much needed competition, I'll have to struggle on with my jailbroken iPhone until then, there's no way I'd Tie myself into an 18mt rip off contract on a soon to be old iPhone!

Yeah, I've only recently been thinking of getting one but I can't see why people are doing so when there'll be a new one out within a few months!

Well he delivered again to me this morning, so I asked him again and he confirmed:

meteor are sending him an iPhone on an upgrade within the month.

He also thought it strange, so he called meteor back to confirm. He also delivers to the meteor shops and said when he told them they were clueless, so the shops don't even know yet!

Probably a case of them looking after good customers & supplying them with iphones on the sly

Didnt Vodafone do this around Xmas 2008 with the 3G to high rolling customers I remember reading online somewhere?

I rang them and asked could I have an iPhone upgrade(mentioned that I knew someone that was offered 1)..I was told that ''about 100 people were chosen at random and offered iPhone upgrades'' he then said not to worry, as the iPhone will be available to everyone on Meteor in the next 4-5 weeks:eek::D

    strange
I left Meteor to move to vodafone at the end of last month and told them the reason I was moving was to get an iphone and they never mentioned it.

I hear the Meteor 3G coverage is not the best. Think it was in todays
    indo or times

Although I didnt know until after i bought the iphone that Vodafone dont support Edge.
    Not sure about Meteor.

I don't know about xmas 08 but I know someone with vodafone who was given an iphone around October last year, well before the official release.

3G is better than EDGE. What's the problem?

If you can't get a 3g signal with o2 you're stuck with edge, which isn't great but it's infinitely preferable to what you'll find on Vodafone i.e GPRS.

except you get 3g everywhere with vodafone

stick up o2's 3g map while you're at it.

i really hope this is true.

i have been wanting an iphone for a long time but am quiet happy with meteors prices.

this is great news if its true.

i rang Meteor customer care earlier to ask them. i told them im just about to get an 18 month contraqct with Vodafone for an iPhone and just wanted to confirm wether Meteor are getting it or not.

She told me that there is internal talk of the iPhone comming but couldnt say wether it would be a month or a year away.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 715 ✭✭✭Newport81

was just speaking to customer care and they said iphone is def coming but wouldnt say when

Can I ask why someone would buy one now when the 4G is out in the summer? I'd love an iphone right now but it makes no sense atm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

you'd be clinically insane to buy an iphone now tbh especially given apple's track record of always replacing old technology with new technology but at the same price point.

Spot on,if you have waited this long another couple of months won't hurt.

if this is true, I for one will be very happy , I have wanted an iphone since it came out but I was not prepared to leave meteor to get it. im verry happy with the plan im on. im not due an upgrade till August so im hoping the new iphone 4G will be out with meteor then.

I'm with Vodafone, and you most certainly don't.

Of course, you don't with O2 either. But with O2, you get to fall back on EDGE - slower, but manageable. With Vodafone, you get to fall back on GPRS - painfully slow.
Can I ask why someone would buy one now when the 4G is out in the summer? I'd love an iphone right now but it makes no sense atm.

I bought a 32GB 3GS last weekend, fully in the knowledge that the next version is due out sometime in the summer.

I did it because I wanted it now, not in 2/3/4 months.

I did it because there's a very, very good chance that at least some of the updates and new features in iPhone 4.0 will work on the current hardware.

I did it because I've been using Apple stuff for 15 years, and the "next version" is always hyped by the rumour sites to the point that it's usually a disappointment when it's actually released (if you listen to the hype). Most Apple updates are evolutionary, not revolutionary.

I did it because the current features of the iPhone suit my needs quite well for the foreseeable future. No doubt the 5G will be out in summer '11, and I'll be happy to think about upgrading then.

i would also love to believe this but the first thing id think about is that Meteor would totally create a huge hype first. Vodafone starting telling people that the iPhone was coming soon sometime back in December 2009 and it didn't launch for 3 and a half months after.

unless maybe the announcement is in 4 to 5 weeks?

Not correct , 3 have the largest 3G population coverage with 94% followed by o2 at 90.5%, I'd guess Vodafone is lagging a good bit behind followed by meteor.
The figures above are a little misleading as there's a substantial difference between 3 & o2's indoor 3G coverage maps.

    3 Indoor in light blue

    o2 Indoor in Purple
    20100406-xctp9sddnujj3624u594iaygqs.jpg

Meteor's Indoor coverage is fairly slim.
    20100406-fex6s978c15mmpkd64g9gj3ucg.jpg

The Vodafone 3G indoor coverage map won't load up for me, their coverage checker is broke.

The 3G coverage maps speak for themselves. o2 and 3 offer the best coverage for the iphone 3G.

I used a vodafone iphone at the weekend and was shocked to find you only get the choice of one network, it won't let you select between 2G & 3G. That's a serious flaw.
Can you select between o2, 2G & 3G on the iphone? Do both networks show up in a network search?

No, only one - O2 IRL. If you turn off 3G it reverts to EDGE though, does that count?

I'm guessing they were just sim free iPhones bought to keep their high rolling customers happy. They did announce that they have no plans to release the iPhone.

He just denied that that was happening.

Kinda makes the "no plans to release" line a bit less credible then doesn't it?

ive asked why are Meteor providing iPhones to some customers and not others, and i got no reply! wont expect one now until Monday at the earliest.

    Hi Ronan,

Sorry if anyone has been told differently but at the minute we have no plans to release the iphone. Don't worry I'll make sure the handset guys keep us updated so if there was any change to this we'll make sure to let you all know as soon as we can.

    Hope this helps
