Why is it coming back in a big way? Didn't it die out in the early 90s cause it was gimmicky and basically sh1t? So whats changed?

Well, 3D looks quite good now, not this iMax crap anymore.

    But truthfully, I don't know, I haven't seen a film in 3D since I was in 5th Class!

Everyone gets the chance to see a mans balls on a pitch in 3D.
The porn industry is now jealous of the football business.

basically this time its proper 3d not the green and red glasses with stuff poppin out at ya all the time .
This time round its clear glasses and depending on how well they implement it when making the movie , it gives a great sense of depth to the screen , objects that are closer on screen are actually closer, further away objects are further away , and every now and then some cool special effect pops out at ya.
You would really need to go and see a movie that has been made with 3d in mind like "up" "alice in wonderland " or avatar is still showing in 3d .

Meh. You still have to wear those gonky glasses.

Ha, the only movie seen in 3D was Jaws 3 back in the 80's, the first 2 were scary, the third was lame, even for a 10 year old.

It's died out at least twice before and will die out again once people become sick of the gimmick. For very little extra cost a movie not designed for 3d can be converted e.g. Alice in Wonderland and the studio gains a greater charge per person for the privilege. Unless the movie was designed for 3d (avatar) this process usually works out terribly e.g. once again Alice and apparently the upcoming Clash of the titans.

It's all thanks to Avatar. I think it's a fad that has to raise it's ugly head every so often.

Whats changed is its not 'basically ****' anymore.

Assuming you think its the same crappy funky colour 3D with the blue and red glasses from the 90's. Todays 3D in the Cinemas and soon at home is proper full colour and sharp etc

If you mean 'basically ****' in terms of some scenes in movies looking like cardboard cutouts and a pop up story book well then, yeah it can still look ****. CGI Beowulf and Avatar in the cinema for example were done very well with no cardboard cutout effect and a really subtle but immersive 3D effect whereas apparently the new Clash of the Titans and Alice in Wonderland 3D movies look a bit crap and popup story bookish.

Those glasses annoyed the hell outta me during Avatar, which looked good in 3D but was still a fairly crappy movie. Though there was a few times I felt like shooing the imaginary flies away :P

Now they're churning everything in 3D to make it stay in the cinemas. Clash Of The Titans is shìt in 3D cuz it wasn't meant to be that type of film, they processed it after it was completed.

Meh, depending that somebody actually puts it to good, justifiable use I don't see any reason to cough up more money in the cinema!

I want my hologram porn now, dammit!

Can't see whats the rush to be honest.

Technology has improved and companies are making less money because of torrenting and pirating. So 3-D in the cinema is a way to get more revenue.

Tbh I thought Avatar was better in 2D ; /

The special effects looked way more realistic without it.

Avatar was cool. Everything else I've seen hasn't impressed. It takes more effort to watch, puts more strain on my eyes. And the glasses aren't exactly comfortable over my own glasses. I'll be seeing Clash of the Titans in 2D.

My eyes get tired watching movies with 3D glasses. I kept having to take them off during Avatar as they were annoying me. Our cinema didn't have Avatar 2D in, only the 3D version.

Same here, and for films like Alice in Wonderland it felt needlessly tacked on.
I really want to see clash of the titans (to please the mythology obsessed child in me), but refuse to go to another 3D film unless it has been shot from the start with 3D in mind. Sadly my local cinema is only showing it in 3D (which means they won't show it on their lovely main screen too, which isn't 3D capable yet...)

Hopefully it dies out again quickly just like all of the times before

My guess is they are trying to stop people from using cameras to record the movies and uploading them immediately on the internet, so they will probably push it as far as possible.

You mean they supply a service or a product in return for payment?
People have been doing that for ages.. Best thing about it is that it's voluntary.

The next Nintendo handheld will be using 3D.

Sharp have produced a 3D LCD for mobile devices that doesn't require the user to wear 3D glasses

Its a bit like Microsoft. Just when you think you've got the full package, sometimes they spring something else on you.

All-right, technology constantly moves on but where is the point where what we have, most of the time is enough?
Just when you and I reach that point. BANG - out they come with another "Wonderful - marvellous - must have!!!" gimmick.

And your right Ads by Google, thank heavens is voluntary.
(if one can dismiss the sales-person/peer/teen/other half/public/advertisement/etc... pressure)

Avatar was a great "Tech Demo" for 3D films but it was planned and shot from the beginning as a 3D film.

Unlike a lot of the stuff out now, where they were film and then the "3D" part was just added on afterwords....

    Nonsense.

Just watched Man Utd Vs Chelsea in 3D and it was amazing. Whatever about movies, sports work incredibly well in 3D.

    Exactly.
Walked into a pub last weekend.
It was like walking suddenly into a "Where's Wally" convention.
All wearing the glasses and staring up in the one direction.
Never thought I'd see so many grown men look so silly in one place, at the same time. :pac:

I notice a Sky 3D channel on my Sky box but there is no way in hell am I shelling out for a new 3D ready tv. 2D will do just fine.

What was shown in 3D last weekend? Sky only launched their 3D service this weekend

3D is 7 seconds behind HD...surely there's no future in that

Harvey Normans were doing an install.
They got the already pub crowd present to check it out and played something.
It was funny to watch the faces of people walking in meanwhile. LOL

As one of the many people who have Amblyopia, 3D does not interest me considering I can't even see it.:D Even if I could see 3D, I stand by my assertion. The whole 3D lark as a cash in for the film companies. They probably figured out that the 3D stuff can be revived to help curb the effects of "illegal downloading". I am very Skeptical of the 3D stuff.

For a match in true HD and 3D, then go to a bloody match.
If ever the day that going to matches involves being in a pub looking like a flute with 3D goggles on then all hope is lost for the human race.

Nothing new about it at all 3d is passé.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,682 ✭✭✭LookingFor

I'm looking forward to it mostly for games. Played with a nVidia system at mate's house on his PC, and it was pretty impressive indeed. PS3's getting an update to play 3D stuff this year, but I doubt I'll be able to afford a new TV so soon.

The next Nintendo handheld is going to have a 3D screen. That was a good sign that it's going to be 'big'/all over the place.

The 3D is actually very good. But I would be careful about what I blow that kinda money on. The two nly good movies I have heard about in 3D were Avatar and How to Train Your Dragon. Interestingly lots (and lots) of people reported Alice in Wonderland was 100x better in 2D, because of the way it was Directed. The vast majority of 3D movies have been cash cows - like Final Destination 3D? "Oh look wow he's throwing an axe at you! IN THREE DEE!!" gimme a break.

Its much better than old 3D - old 3D use Red and Blue color layered over eachother, Red and Blue filtered glasses, and it wasnt very crisp, and the colors werent that rich either. It also worked on standard film-projectors which lets face it, are crap by modern standards and give a much fuzzier image compared with a modern projector.

Read3D uses 2 lenses Polarized at 90 degrees to eachother to give each eye its own picture without any color confusion. Coupled with Digital Light Processing sceens (Which works on Prisms and ****, and is very expensive) This means a very crisp, High Definition, Full Color display.

If you havent been to see a 3D movie yet - its well worth going. Avatar was really good looking. Especially for colors. HTTYD is supposed to be better than Avatar though for the whole 3D experience.
