With Ofcom in the UK now demanding Sky provide Sky Sports HD to VM, I'm wondering will this open the door for UPC to provide us with a tip-top HD service here in Ireland??

    Possibly good times ahead??

Ofcom have no say about what Sky has to offer here so I wouldn't be building up too much hope.

I do know that btw, just saying if Sky over there are putting HD Sports content on to VM, there would be a possibility of that happening here soon after.

The Ofcom report, which Sky is challenging (to delay until after the u.k. general election?), has insisted that sky drop the wholesale price that it charges for sky sports 1 and 2. It made no mention of the other channels or H.D. Ultimately this could mean no change. You would imagine with all of the investment in HD that $ky has made that they would want services as widely available as possible, so we will have to wait and see.

The main reason (of which I don't agree with) is that Sky want new customers to be going them constantly, the HD content now is a major draw - with cable companies not having this currently, it leaves Sky in a prominent position big-style.

You would hope that the regulators here would follow Ofcom's lead. Would be nice to see them leading for a change but even following in this case would be good. That said our authorities have an abysmal record of standing up to monopolies. Look how inhibited the broadband market is due to Eircom pushing its weight around.
