Seriously, I always hit a point when I have to reel it way back in, gone too far down the rabbit hole....

    Anyone have thought on guidelines?

It's hard when you're your own client sometimes.

Depends how much it messes with the flow ;)

Reel it back in? thats where your going wrong....

At any point if its for the "love of music/creativity" and not that dreaded financial gain side of things then keep going as its all part of the process and your in creative mode....

Im a firm believer in whatever I did on that track that day is it and no more will be added unless I can get back into the same frame of mind which is often hard :D

Like a painter I would find it weird that they would rub out that orange part in the picture as they are trying to reel it back in ;) its what they felt that day and moment :D

If its an advert or something for financial gain then I will analyse it more :)

Well... ok, I hear all of this.... I guess it's not exactly what I meant.

Sometimes when I push toward an idea, which is weird, but cool I find that I've swung wide of my target and instead of accomplishing the original idea I've gone in another direction. Which is fine and sometime the most exciting part of writing/producing. Other times though I start to essentially just make experiments for experiments shape and they become more important than the actual content of the song... does that make sense?

Even that can be OK, I suppose, but when this new dominate thing becomes weirded than the actual song, by miles and miles... what can I do?

I just reel is back in, re-assess if the original idea was good and I just missed it, or if I learned it was never really going to work, and try again.

you have to know when to draw the line.

theres being creative and then theres being weird.
it still needs to be accessable,it has to work at a listening level.

if people think about there favourite music, even if its experimental, they can still understand it.

i think people use the creativity excuse to peddle any old ****e as music.saying its them expressing themselves through song etc etc when its really them just fannying about.

its like if i threw paint at a canvas and turned around and pointed to a building and saying its a picture of said building that went on a bit of a tangent.

who can say it didnt start out as a painting of a building, who can prove me otherwise.

dont ge me wrong theres some great off the wall stuff out there but i think its also used as an excuse.

    not pinpointing anyone in particular

Just that image there we could turn you into a piece of live performance art chucking paint at canvasses and randomly pointing at stuff... I can see that working in the Tate...

It's need to be a firehose and a 5 story canvas to work at the tate...

    hmmm...

To really make it work you'd need to scream a random word just to throw people. Paint-Point-Phernergamargh!

Now, back on topic to weird please ;P

It's all about discipline. Going off on a tangent can lead to some wonderful places but it can also take you away from where you are trying to go.

But that's probably where the creativity comes from so er. Everything in moderation, especially moderation. Mods these days. When I were a lad......wanders off mumbling.

    On the subject of weird....

If you found it fun, then it's not that bad... if it destroys the flow for other listeners then you've f*cked it up.

I remember messing with a pure saw wave and some lfos for an extended period of time and put the headphones down.... then when i heard voices on the tv and any sound in the room they were all affected by the fluid still oscillating in my ear making all sounds like they were bubbling water.... great fun stuff, but completely useless.

Although sometimes things that do disrupt or completly stand out can work!

    Example :

Guitar solo is at 2.37, doesnt fit the song at all but sometimes i still get chills listening to it!

  • Site Banned Posts: 4,415 ✭✭✭MilanPan!c

I Always try and make gradual crossfades between versions of songs chunks... So like between a normal verse and an FXd verse... Always sounds good on my head, but like ass in the box.... Just never have found the perfect place..... It comes out opaque, not transparent, and is distracting, not suprising and exciting...

Oh well, I'll try again on the next song...

pretty tasty to be fair, hadn't heard that before, and you're right it's kind of out of the blue in that song

    Juxtaposition!! :D

Weird is allowed as long as there's a reason behind it. Of course there's also the question of why you are making the music in the first place.

    Palestine.

I really like the pitch shifter thing on that solo though. It's like an old MXR or something.
