But Herr McDowell abandoned his cafebar plan a few years ago. I do drink but growing to despise the drinking to excess culture that penetrates most of Irish life...including my native treaty city right now.:)

It's defo a good idea. There's definitely an attitude in this country that the word socializing refers to one thing and one thing only.

I love nothing more than sitting in a cafe late at night, I sometimes head for the airport and sit in Starbucks at 2am with a friend, I'm such a night person though

Pity there's no Starbucks in my vicinity!.....On St patricks Day people hugging me who I had never met before....and the poor children..........As I said I do drink but only 2 or 3 and I'm full.maybe even less if there was capuchino's available.......Yeah I actually avoided pubs deliberately last night despite living in Limerick....matches usually bring out the madness in the crowd and with last orders and 11pm last night...it was unlikely to be better!:)

It's a bit weird but when I was a teenager there was a good cafe scene in Limerick. Javas used to open until 3am at weekends and midnight during the week. And then Puccinis opened up as a 24 hour cafe. I spent many, many hours in both, especially Javas. This was '96ish, so I'm sure Friends was partly responsible.

Java's had a great reputation but sadly passed away about 4 years ago.....don't think there's any late Cafe's now.....all close around 5 or 6....saw more clownish behaviour in my local last night........I'm a person who loves a laugh...but becoming ever more cynical at the inebriated behaviour in Irish pubs......

I was in Paris in January, and the café scene there is soooo good!

You can get any drinks you want! Coffee, or beer, to juice and soft drinks

Furniture is always comfy and intimate, and perfect music levels for chats

And your drinks last way longer

I caught up with an old mate a few weeks ago in Starbucks. We got one drink each and talked for nearly 3 hours

I sure wish there were nice late night cafe's too. I don't drink, and if you don't drink, there is simply NO where to socialize or hang out, with the exception of Supermacs, that doesn't involve booze:(

I think I would be more of a social person if Ireland and England had the kind of cafe culture that France has. As it is, the main reason I have no social life is because usually the only places to socialise are pubs and I'm no fun in pubs.
