got my new iphone 3gs the other day will vodafone bill pay. very happy with it so far except the battery which only seems to last 24 hours and this is with very little use of the phone. is this right?

ive seen people mention different versions on boards. what does this mean?

If you've only just received it, chances are that you are like a kid with a new toy and you cannot put it down;) That said, through normal use, mine would last maybe 2-3 days without charging.

It also helps to reduce the brightness on the screen as its one hungry mthr fckr :D

If you find you are a heavy user, it helps to get the active car cradle form brodit. A neat piece of kit and your charging woes are eliminated, if you have a car of course.

i'm heavy enough user, and have to charge every 24hrs,
usually plug it in when i go to bed, pain in the ars, but the the screen and having lots of push apps working 24/7 is a killer, you have to think of it as more of a computer on the go then a phone, a mini computer that has a phone function !!:pac:

If you turn off edge and 3G in the settings menu when you are not using them saves loads of battery life.

    Ya can't turn off edge

i always lol at people that haven't jailbroken, they just don't know what they are missing out on,
    no offense to anyone !

can you turn off 3G on an unjailbroken phone, while continuing to send and receive calls and text messages? if so then how can you turn it off?

    cheers

ya, 3g is just a superior faster connection then been connected to E, speeds of up to 1.5 mb, turning off wont stop you receiving texts calls or anything, just makes your data connection really slow,
    you can turn off settings>general>network

turning off everything, like some suggest, you might as well have an nokia ! an iphone is what it is, and if you want the most out of it as it was meant to be used it eats battery,

turn off 3G, Wireless, Bluetooth and location services when only using it for daily use.. will increase the battery duration by a good bit

what's the point in having an iphone if you run it with no 3g etc.? turning everything off defeats the whole purpose of an iPhone. you might as well just got an iPod touch and a ****ty 20 euro nokia phone.

fair enough turning off wireless when you're not in a wifi area, or bluetooth when you ain't using them.

i'm raging i didnt jb my 3gs, i was worried somethin might happen it and then not be covered by apple, on 3.1.3 now and cant wait for a jb for it

this is gonna sound dumb but what does jailbroken mean?

i agree with one of the posts. whats the point having it if you have to turn everything on and off the whole time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

google it, ya more than likely have 3.1.3 on ur iphone, that firmware hasnt bein hacked yet

While researching my battery problem last week, I read that the saving on having 3g off vs having it on in terms of battery is negligabe, unless the 3g signal is poor, then the phone has to work harder to maintain it.

    Semi related..

I really hate how long it takes for the iphone to come on after charging it from dead. My phone is siiting there 40 minutes now plugged in and it still hasn't gone past the battery page (with the small bit of red and the lightening bolt)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,706 ✭✭✭120_Minutes

Are you charging from USB or mains? USB takes a bit longer

thats a bit excessive, if mine is dead it turns on within a few minutes, connected through either mains or usb

40 minutes that's not right, it should be some way powered up by now..

on a side note, what's the quickest way to charge, mines plugged in now since half 10 and it's still only at 70% it started at 10%, it's unreal slow to charge, plugged into mains.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,706 ✭✭✭120_Minutes

mine took about 90 mins or so to charge from 20% via usb on a pc here at work. it can vary depending on the usb though, and the power supplied to it from the motherboard. i'd suspect that usb hubs take longer.

    40 mins doesnt sound right

A couple of times I left mine charging up overnight on a USB hub into the computer, and despite it showing the charging symbol the phone was drained next morning. Direct into the computer now, wall charger or bedside dock.

It was from the mains. Something was wrong though cause after a while I plugged out the wire...plugged it back in and a few seconds later it came on..still takes quite a while though

I just turn stuff on when I need it. Because I have my phone jailbroken and sbsettings I'm 2 seconds away from turning any feature on. Like if I'm gonna check my mail, edge is totally grand. If I'm gonna have a browsing session, well then I'll bother with the wifi or 3g. Same as the GPS. Turned it on for the first time in a week today (and it was awesome :D).

apparently the ipad has two iphone sized batterys in it. Both with 2.5 times the power than the current iphone battery. Bodes well for the battery life on the 4G.

Have you a link for that?

sorry, it was an error by gizmodo, couldn't find it again last night when posting, they've changed the post now:

    http://gizmodo.com/5508884/ipads-batteries-are-equivalent-to-5-iphones-in-power-2-in-volume
Here's a great factoid from iFixit's teardown: the iPad power source is made up of two batteries that are each roughly the same size as that found in the iPhone. The kicker? Each has 2.5x the capacity. UPDATE

Overall, the iPad has 5x the power capacity of the iPhone.

Why is this interesting, beyond being the king of your resident water cooler? It's not hard to imagine the next iPhone being equipped with one of these iPad batteries, meaning that even if you don't give a crap about the iPad, your iPhone 4G could have 2.5x the run time.

Of course, if you don't care about the iPhone or the iPad, well, why are you reading this? [iFixit]

UPDATE: We misread iFixit's sarcasm. The iPad batteries are indeed quite a bit bigger than iPhone batteries. From iFixit:

    iPad:
4.5 mm x 118 mm x 57 mm for each of the two cells
    60.5 cc volume total

    iPhone:
    4 mm x 41 mm x 68 mm
    11.2 cc
