try going to "setup -> playback engine" and increase the hardware buffer size. This will help with your plugins, but will also increase your latency.

what are your computer specs though? because that's the biggest factor

    windows or mac? processor? ram?

also instrument plugins use a lot of power

Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1

dont know where to get the ram im useless with computers

    and i have a mac osx 10.6

hmm, what is it? a macbook? Is it a new enough computer? 2GHz isn't that fast, but i'd expect it to run.

if you click the apple in the top left then "about this mac", it'll say your processor and memory (which is ram). Lots of ram is good.

    have you tried all these?

also, have you updated to Pro tools 8.0.3? snow leopard isn't supported below that.

Try deleting all the preferences too. If you search the Avid site there for deleting pro tools preferences, you'll find that. They often cause problems.

Have you tried to see how many tracks you can run with no plugins? then start adding dverbs or something, to see how many you get before it craps out?

Also, don't be running other programs while you are using pro tools.

(i'm sure you may know some or all of this.... just spouting out the usual checks here)

get the appropriate one there. Download the file, install, restart.

do the optimizations above too though, they do help!!

(don't be sorry, we all start somewhere)

ah now, don't be getting disillusioned!:)

there's a bit of a learning curve (that doesn't really ever end. i'm most certainly nowhere near it), but essentially the same logic applies to all DAWS in a way.

For starters, you should definitely read through the digidesign site in your spare time. Go through the FAQs. If there are manuals there, have a good read. Try to have a look through your pro tools system while your reading about certain things, even if it doesn't apply to you right now.

Here's a link to the DUC (Digidesign User Conference)

    http://duc.digidesign.com/

There's some great information on there. Read through people's posts and the stickies. (try not to jump in with questions without trying to find out the information first, people will appreciate that a bit more over there.)

But anywho, for starters, are you recording to an external drive? is that external drive firewire, not usb? is the speed of it 7200 RPM at least? Does it have an oxford chipset? etc etc etc....
These are the recommended things that would help avoid your problem (but they most certainly would help with all DAWS) having said that, they aren't all essentials, some are more important than others, but that's me saying that, not the manufacturers.

aswell, you should learn about computers in general. it is a major help with any program you use.
