AAI Permits - what are they about?

I have a query concerning the granting of permits from AAI.
Does anyone know what having a permit actually means?
What happens if I organise a race without a permit?
Does having a permit infer quality of the course or organisation?
Is there a fee applicable to apply for a permit?
What is the criteria in order to get a permit?

    Take a look at the
following which has been posted on the Cork County website. It looks like the Cork County board are attempting to saction non permit-holding races.....

    March 31 –
CountyBoard Notice regarding The Bay Run and other races without AAI permits
The Bay Run Half Marathon (Glengarriff to Bantry) takes place on May 2nd 2010.This race does NOT have an Athletics Ireland permit.Cork County Board was not approached directly or indirectly via a Cork club regarding this event. The Board is requesting that all Cork clubs advise their athletes not to support or participate in this event or any other athletics event that does not have a permit from Athletics Ireland.

Organisers of road races and athletic events (Open Sports etc.) in Cork must apply for an Athletics Ireland permit at least 4 months in advance via the Cork County Board.Permit application forms are available by contacting the Secretary at corkaaipro@gmail.com

As far as I know, the granting of permits allows the AAI to ensure that races / events don't clash. A "book" is maintained of all upcoming events and when you apply (via your local county board), you will NOT be granted a permit if there is already a similar event to be held on the same date within 50 miles of the proposed event.

It also ensure that certain criteria are met, for example the course must be accurately measured by a qualified individual.

There are also insurance implications, I'm open to correction, but events with an AAI Permit are covered under the AAI insurance.

yes, there is a fee involved for applying, €52.50 I think.

Looks like the Cork folk might be a tad suspicious of the motivations of holding a race without a permit, commercial reason perhaps ? Be interesting to know what the entry fee is.

AAI affiliated club events are covered by the AAI insurance. Non-AAI bodies/organisations must have sufficient insurance cover in place (and must produce evidence of such cover) if applying for a permit.
