Im looking to buy a new laptop. Im looking at a budget of circa 500 - 600 euros. Id prefer a good brand such as Toshiba or HP, with an Intel cpu and I need to laptop to have an Infrared port. Is this realistic at this price?

I couldnt be sure but I havent seen a laptop with infrared on it for years. It is a really out dated technology which has largely been replaced with bluetooth and other technologies. If you absolutely need infrared you might be better off getting a usb adaptor like this one.

Ive never used that site but you might find others around.

Yes, you are unlikely to find a new one with IR. Heres another
    link to ebay item

I have IR on my laptop and phone, BT on the phone too, but I find the IR handy to transfer stuff

thanks guys thats very useful feedback. Im not very knowledgable about IT Im afraid. The infrared request was my wife who wants to upload photos from her phone onto the laptop without using wires. From what you are saying if a laptop has bluetooth this is all thats required to upload her photos directly onto the laptop without using wires?

Yup. Bluetooth is all she needs. It'll be faster than doing it over infrared and it doesn't need you to point your phone at a port, but it'll still be slower than connecting up a usb cable.

IF her phone has bluetooth. I'm sure some phones still don't have it.
If her phone only does IR,then the USB IR adapter is the one.Or a plain USB lead.

thanks guys, so if her phone has bluetooth and if the new laptop has bluetooth she can transfer her photos over using bluetooth. Do most laptops these days have bluetooth?

I wouldn't say most, but a lot of them do. If they don't have it built in you can buy tiny bluetooth usb dongles that will work.
Actually here's one for about €1.50 LINK. It'd probably take a while to arrive though.
