I need a whole carpet cleaned in my sitting room. What would be the best way to do it - hire someone to do it for me(cost etc) or buy a machine to keep and do it myself? As regards a machine, can someone recommend a good one please.

    Thanks

I've used 'Rug Doctor' machines that I hired and then bought a second hand Vax upright carpet washer. Both gave me similar results to be honest only I own the Vax and it cost me £40 whereas the Rug Doctor was £25 to hire, so in the long run the Vax will 'pay' for itself.

I hired the Rug Doctor (from Woodies) recently to do my stairs and landing. Worked great. I have a light fawn coloured carpet (stupid for a high traffic area I know) which had various marks and stains on it but otherwise is okay-didn't really look like landing needed to be cleaned. Got most of the stains out with the Rug doctor spot and stain remover (same as any of the spot removers like 2001 or Vanish) and almost didn't bother with the machine but was glad I did. The amount of FILTHY water I poured down the drain later showed how dirty the carpet really was (it's just like the ad for Rug Doctor on TV!). It cost 25 euro for 24 hours or 29.99 for 48 hrs which was really good value I think. Had to buy the shampoo (about 18 euro but only used a quater of it so will have it for the next few times). I did think that while it was cheap, buying a Vax might be cheaper in the long run but......I have nowhere to store another bulky appliance and since I'd only hire it occasionally (once or twice a yr probably) 25 euro is fine for the convenience!

Meant to say, a friend recently got her sitting room (and large fireside rug) cleaned by ChemDry for 75 euro. Looked great but expensive for one roomI think.
