    Hi,

Quick question (not sure if this is even the right forum to post in). I have a Sky box in a room and I now want to use that Sky box in a separate room. What cable do I need to do this?

    Thanks in advance.

    Sorry, should have been clearer.

Sky Box is in Room A. Room A is used infrequently. Next door is Room B. Room B has just a tv, no box. I want to use the Sky Box from Room A and move it to Room B. Obviously the cable will be going through the two rooms and I'll have to leave the door slightly open, that's not a problem. How do I go about doing this?

If you dont mind a cable trailing from a to b get soem good quality satellite cable , two f connectors and a double female F . If you dont want a trailing lead then you need a quad lnb for your sky minidish and run a cable from that to room B

Thanks for the reply. Nah, I don't mind the cable running through the two rooms at all, more of a temporary thing. How much am I looking at for those 4 things? Where's the best place to pick them up in Dublin city centre?

You could try maplins but I hear they are expensive. If you can make it to fairview freesat.ie is a good choice

Cool. How much am I looking at spending, roughly?

Also, will there be a reduction in the picture quality?

Sorry about this but bump :)

If you don't mind a slight reduction in picture quality, your best bet is running a coax cable from the RF2 port on the back of the sky box across to your other room, then getting a Magic-Eye and plugging that into the TV in your other room. That way you don't have to keep on moving the box around each time. This is pretty cheap (a run of coax cable is about €0.50/m, and magic-eyes cost about a tenner), and simple to install.
The picture is reasonable (about the same as terrestrial TV imho), but you only get mono sound.

Thanks for that. The mono sound thing puts me off slightly but the cost of it all is cheap as chips, so that's one positive. Do you have any idea how much the other solution would cost? See the thing is that we don't need to have it in both rooms so it's not like it'll be moving about the place the whole time.

    Btw, where can I get a Magic-Eye?

Never tried the other solution...you'd need higher quality cables (no idea what they would cost)...another option is a very long SCART lead between the two rooms -- I think you can get ones up to about 20m, but I haven't looked into it too much. This would give you much better picture/sound, but you'd also need the coax or else a remote IR sensor to forward the remote control signal.

We got ours in Power City, but you can get them in almost any tv shop, or eBay. Some of them come with second remotes as well.

Also - you'd be better off moving the box to Room B first, and running the cables from Room B to Room A, so that you get the better picture quality on the "frequently used" room.

    Cheers.

I went to Satellite.ie and came up with the following:

F coaxial connector Screw on 2
    €0.48 €0.96
    F connector double female 1
    €0.50 €0.50
Digital coaxial cable TX 100 per metre 10
    €0.81 €8.10

I'm wondering if that'll do the trick or will I have to order something else?

That will work if you are using the "room A to B " option , as we have flat rate shipping though it can be relatively expensive to get a small order like this so perhaps check out Mrs. Thatchers suggestion before you go ahead

It's saying that it's only 5.99 for shipping, would this be about right?

Also, would this option not have better picture quality and sound than the other option?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,341 ✭✭✭✭Tony

5.99 plus vat for next day shipping , it should give you exactly the same picture quality in both rooms if done correctly and would be better quality than the RF2 outlet with stereo sound as the tx100 is top quality cable.

Hey Tony, quick (possibly silly) question. I got the cable, two f connectors and the double female f connector, but I'm not exactly sure what I'm supposed to do. Currently the Sky box in room A has two cables going in to the back of it...twin turner I think it is? So what exactly do I do here?

    Thanks!

You disconnect one of the dish input cables and connect the new cable to it.

I'll do that now. See, there's two cables going in to the back of the sky box in Room A, but now only one of them is going into the back of the box in Room B...could this be the problem?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,341 ✭✭✭✭Tony

Yes you will not have full recording functionality with one cable

Huh? How come you did not say you had a sky + box originally?

Apologies...didn't even realise it was a sky plus box! So the recording feature doesn't bother me...should it still work with just the one cable?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,341 ✭✭✭✭Tony

No problem, yes it will still work.

Bah, still not receiving a signal it's saying! Is it most likely the way the f connectors are set up? Maybe I should just snip off what I've done and try it again?
