I've got to fit a stairs up to a newly converted attic this week, only problem is there's an alarm cable in my way and there's not enough slack on it to move it out of my way. If i turn off the mains powr and cut the cable and add another piece into it to lengthen it will it do the system any harm?

Power down the mains and disconnect the battery. This will prevent you blowing any fuses if there are powered devices on that cable.
