Overlapping employment.... PAYE tax implications...?

Hi guys, hopefully somebody can help me?

I am finishing work with my current employer in six weeks time and starting with a new employer. My current employer is insisting that I remain in employment for the complete six weeks but my new employer is insisting that I commence employment in five weeks. In order to keep both happy, for my last week in my current position I am taking it as annual leave but I will be commencing my new position on that week (which I am on annual leave with the current employer....).

Because I will technically be employed by both employers for a period of a week, I am pretty concerned about the tax implications. I am not sure what to do...? Does anyone know what the tax problem will be or has this happened to anyone?

    Thanks for your help!

    Hi

Best of luck in your new job.

When you obtain your p45 from your old employer it will include your gross pay and tax credits up to the date that you officially ceased employment with him.

Your new employer takes this p45 and uses it to work out the correct tax deductions to make when paying out your new salary.

The upshot will be that you will not get any tax credits for the first week in your new employment. They will already have been used by your first employer in calculating your final salary payment.

Other then that there is nothing else for you to do. It will all be sorted out once you give in your P45 to your new employer.

    Hope this helps
