    Hi all,

Getting free to air installed next week, fella is using recondition sky dish and sky boxes (I'm assuming they are old style boxes).
Question I have, could I buy a Sky HD box after everything is installed, swap it with one of the old sky boxes, and then get BBC HD and ITV HD.
Would be great with the World Cup coming up!!

Why are you getting second hand equipment installed and then you are going to buy a second hand Sky HD box.??????

You should buy a new Free to air HD system or a Freesat HD system installed with a warranty

I believe the fella is in the trade - got him from the Galway advertiser.
He quoted me under €400 for free 2 air and RTE aerial in two rooms.
I wouldnt be able to do installation myself, I cant even wire a plug. Dont want to destroy the inside of the house with wires or holes everywhere.

I was quoted over €800 for the same from others.

My plan is to get the free to air installed - then buy a HD box (preferably a Sky HD) to get BBC & ITV HD for the world cup.

For €400 You should be at least be getting very cheap New Free to air receivers not second hand sky boxes.

I'd be happy with the price quoted, as long as the work is top notch.
Also by having the sky boxes and dishes installed - in the future if I want to get subscription tv back, all I'd have to do would be fone Sky, get a viewing card for €22ish a month.

Can I swap out the sky box and replace with Sky HD box, or another HD STB , so that I can receive BBC HD!!

If the guy is in the trade then more than likely the boxes are ones he's picked up free from customers who re subbed to get new equipment.
If he's prepared to offer you a warranty then well and good.
If he attempts to install boxes by Grundig or black/grey colour pace units then refuse point blank.

Yes you can swop out any of the boxes for a HD however you'd need to sub to sky to avail of the recording facility.
Also you'll need a 2nd feed too to get the full usage from it, although it'll work fine with one feed.

    Excellent.
What is wrong with the Grundig and black/grey colour pace units.

They are Prone to PSU faults and tuner faults.
And dont forget to get a Receipt and warranty.

I honestly agree, save yourself all the hassle and get HD installed from Sky for €50.

€400 + another €100 for a second hand HD box is cheaper than what?

Have you priced an official installation and one years basic sub to Sky multiroom after which you can cancel and keep your new HD+ box and Sky+ box?

Can't get multiroom with Sky - dont have a fone line. I know I could use the magic eye.

Sky would have worked out at about €330 - but that was for only one tv!
If I could get Sky Multiroom without a fone line I would order it in a shot!!

That leaves €170, which should cover asking the installer to run a spare cable to the other room and then buying a new FTA box to use there.

I make it out to be a bit less...

    Sub: €22 x 12 = €264
    Set-up: €30
    Online Credit: €25

    Total: €264 + €30 - €25 = €269 for year 1

...but there may be a charge to install Sky without a phoneline. Not sure what this would be. You were going to pay €400 plus the cost of a 2nd hand Sky HD box (probably €150 on eBay including postage).

You can get a very nice Humax Freesat HD reciever for €135 including postage from Amazon UK. And as suggested, offer to pay the Sky installer cash to run the extra cable to the 2nd room for you.

Both the Sky HD and Humax boxes would be brand new and in warranty.
