Laptop Battery.

Hi guys. I have a Dell Inspiron 1318 which I got about a year and a half ago. When I turned it on today it said that the battery is coming to the end of its life and that I should buy a new one. Now I don't know a lot about laptops, but surely the battery should last more than a year and a half? Would I be able to claim for this under my warranty or do I just have to suck it up and buy a new battery?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Batteries aren't covered under warranty afaik. As for how long they should last, that depends on how it's been used. My old Dell inspiron's battery was completely gone after a year(that was about 4 years ago mind). So long as it still works then just continue to use it.

Yes the warranty wont cover that, 2 things that reduce the life of lithium ion batteries which notebooks use is keeping them fully charged all the time, and the heat from notebooks. New one required, rip off prices though from dell

So is it better to just let the battery run down and then charge it up or keep it charging all the time? I just want to make sure I let this new battery last as long as possible!

Well to maximise battery life the ideal thing to do would be only let it half charge, then remove it from notebook and store in a cool place, only using in notebook when needed for portability by fully charging it ready to go mobile. But this is not all that practical. Most notebooks keep the battery fully charged during normal use, and its this being fully charged all the time combined with the heat from notebooks that shortens the lithium ion battery life.

So not a lot that can be done except if removing battery is practical while you use notebook on the power adaptor, preferebly at a half charged state. Just charge it up then when needed.

I dont think its too clever to run a laptop without a battery...:rolleyes:

Imagine doing that 80 page report or beating that bad ass mobster boss on level 140 only to trip over the power cord.

I do it all the time. Sitting at a desk there isn't much risk really.

Its not for everyone to remove battery, but it will drastically reduce the battery degrade rate for those that use their notebooks mostly on a table or desktop, pc`s manage without a power battery, and i remove my one all the time and leave in fridge sometimes. Have it years with no noticeable decline at all in capacity. Just use it when i am using notebook on the move.

If your goin to do an 80 page report then put battery in then during that.
