    laptop has a spec of
    2ghz T5870 Core2 Duo
    4gb ram
    gma4500HD
    vista

but it wont play back HD x264(mkv) or avchd (from hd camcorder) properly. Using VLC 1.0.5 for playback.
Are there some other codecs I should install??

sounds like a few tweaks on your laptop may also work.

e.g. clear temporary files, defrag your drive

you could also try playback at a reduced quality level

    You need the CoreAVC codec.

    Makes mkv's run like butter.

a codec you have to pay for?
Doesnt seem to improve anything and sound wont work with it played through windows media player 11.
    does ffdshow improve things?

i've installed kmplayer and have it configured to use CoreAVC with h264 and avc1. Things seem to be a bit better but the hd video is still not smooth.:(

also noticed that flash video like rteplayer use 100% cpu as well.

First make sure your computer isn't on power saver. Sounds obvious but for the sake of thoroughness I have to say it.

Whats the specs on the video? (resolution, bitrate, maybe ref frames).

Bring up the task manager (CTRL+ALT+DELETE) and see if there's anything else loading your CPU. What % utilisation does KMPlayer have?

It would have to be pretty effing superior to the freeware already available to justify paying for it. is it?

Meanwhile, try the K-Lite codec pack, which is free.

Actually i'd agree that CoreAVC is pretty damn efficient as far as H264 decoding goes.

But like I say, first i'd start off with the basics, narrow down whether it is a CPU usage problem or something else entirely.

Im pretty sure a 2GHz dual core can handle most 1080p H264 content based on sheer power alone, without needing a super-efficient decoder or hardware acceleration. I throttled my own laptop down to 2GHz just there and a 12GB 1080p mkv had about 30-35% utilisation in VLC, and 20-25% in MPC-HC (with the FFDshow decoder)

I couldn't get HD mkvs to run smooth at all on my Netbook with its Intel integrated graphics, but after installing CoreAVC they run fine now.

If you have an nVidia graphics card in your laptop it also utilizes CUDA support to aid in the decoding.

    My setup is currently:

MPC (some people like VLC, I don't)
    ffdshow (updated almost weekly)

and CoreAVC for the formats it handles. ffdshow handles all the audio, and any of the video format not covered by CoreAVC. I've tried all the codec packs, K-Lite, CCCP... etc, and I settled on ffdshow, it's the best and most frequently updated of the lot.

I might look into it, but i havent played videos in a long while. For sure though, 2ghz dual core is capable of playing full HD especially with a GPU in it.

Thing sure ran damn hot though on 1080p. So yeah, if it can do that any better, could be worth it.

I use FFDSHOW as part of the Community Codec Pack, never had any problems, even on old machines.

Cheers all for the tips. I'll give ffdshow a go, i have used that before but thought it wasnt supported in the last few years. I'll check the power profiles as well. I was testing both with the laptop plugged in and on battery, didnt see any difference but will double check settings for both.

I noticed there are some Roxio codecs installed for playback and tried unstalling the Roxio software but it crached half way through and wont uninstall properly now. is there a way to manually remove codecs?

How can i get that info?

you can run HD mkvs on a netbook??!! Would love if i could do that so i could stop lugging my laptop around and carry my Aspire One netbook instead. Do you not need a netbook with an ION chipset for that or is that needed for HD flash only?
