    Hi all

Just looking for a bit of guidance here. :)

My boyfriend was made redundant a few weeks ago, he's finding it impossible to get a job and has been claiming the dole ever since. His situation isn't looking like it's going to improve any time soon so we're considering making the move to London to give him a better chance of finding work.

However, I'm finding that a bit frightening as it would mean me resigning from my job. Although I'm not that well paid it's a steady job and is currently our only real source of income. Also there is no certainty that we would both get employment straight away when we go over - and I wouldn't be able to afford to pay rent, all the bills etc in Dublin for long if he were to go over first to try get settled (he's always been the main bread winner)

I've heard that he might be able to transfer his dole payments to London for a while, is that true? Would I be entitled to anything considering I will have to resign a viable job?

We are, of course, hoping that we'll get jobs quickly and be able to provide for ourselves over there - but if I've learned anything the last few months it's that you have to plan for every eventuality.

Thanks in advance, any help would be great

A difficult one - if you are relatively happy in your job i certainly wouldn't give it up - recession is global and tis alive and kicking in the UK. Two of you out of a job would be pretty awful - a lot of pressure and stress. Let him go over and see does he get a job, maybe commute for a while. Maybe you move into some cheaper in Dublin.

He can get dole over there.

    Hi
London isn't the cheapest place to live either. Also you need to remember that the wages in the UK are lower and you will need to pay water rates and council tax (if you don't pay CT its 14 days in prison!)

No harm in looking over in the UK of course, but it may be a good idea for you to keep your job till he has secured one over there.

I may be wrong, but if he goes to the UK I think they only keep paying JSB for 12 weeks? (Feel free to correct me on this)

    Thanks guys

I think it is likely that he will go over first and try get something over there before I go. To be honest, I'm not happy at all in my job, but it's money coming in (albeit not much!) so I am going to sit it out here for as long as I can. If he does get settled and gets a decent job in the UK though I will go over. I can't even imagine staying in Dublin on my own in a job I hate - and surely the cost of commuting for even part of the week would be as bad as the cost of CT etc in the UK?
