Does anyone know about scrappage extensions - PLEASE!

By the time I realised I could get a great scrappage deal on a 7-seater, the scrappage deadlines are now on top of me.

Does anyone know if Citroen or Opel for example will extend their March 31 deadline?

.. Or if the dealers are likely to supplement government scrappage themselves after the Manufacturer's offer ends?

Please can someone re-assure me that I shouldn't run out and make any rash purchases tomorrow!

Most dealers will keep subsidising the scrappage deals. They may change their offers from month to month but they shouldn't change to much.

The best offers were always going to be for the first 3 months because its the most important quarter for the motor trade . 60% of new car business is done in these 3 months hence the manufacturers, who only care about unit sales, do the best deals. Renault's double scrappage deal ends the end of this month anyway, I dont know about any other brands. Nobody is more sorry than me that its ending because it helped us sell some amount of cars. :(

Saab Ed, thanks for the prompt reply. Your posts in general give a great insight for us punters into the world of the car dealerships (imho).

So, you reckon this is it then? The dealer I spoke to said "well, we'd be the last to know", which I suppose makes sense, but do you really believe that Renault and others won't extend it come Thursday?

I have the wherewithal to do the deal tomorrow, but it scares the sh*t out of me. I never bought a new car before in my life. I'd kill for another week or two to settle my nerves.

But if that week was going to cost me 3,000 Euro I might just take the plunge. I suppose the most it can cost me is the deposit

Renault has cried wolf before. On a couple of occasions last year I was offered Renaults for huge discounts on the basis that the discounts would be ending on a certain deadline and would never be repeated. The deadline kept shifting. This was pre scrappage scheme, IIRC they were calling it "registration discount" then.

I'd be inclined to sit tight and in fact am doing so myself.... but could have egg on my face come Thursday :)

The official word from Renault at the moment is that the double scrappage ends on Thursday for all of the range except the new Fluence http://www.renault.ie/discover/newfluence.html which they have said they will be running an exclusive deal on.

I suppose the simple answer to your question is the deal might be worse by next Thursday but its not going to get any better. ;)

    I'd do the deal now.

Been told from Renault that it's ending, additional support that was available from Volvo has been discontinued for anything not registered before cob tomorrow. Large discount available on the Mondeo if regged today or tomorrow, but that ends on Thursday as well.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility of another scheme being put in place, but I wouldn't be taking that chance.

Thanks lads. I rang them and said I'd do the deal in the morning. Whether I will or not remains to be seen ...

It's ok, I wasn't planning on getting too much sleep tonight anyway ...

Sure renault are selling alot of cars & can possibly afford to reduce these discounts for a while but I cannot see the deals going away across the board. No chance.

O/T but I presume that the Fluence is the saloon version of the new Megane?

I thought the only 7 seaters that qualified for government scrappage were the Grand Scenic , C4 picasso and one of he Fiats? Or are you just going on dealer scrappage with the Opel? Surely the deal on an Opel would be considerably worse? (plus you'd have to sit in and drive a Zafira :P )

Have you driven and thoroughly researched all the models you're considering and shopped around for the best prices? If not, do nothing - buying a new car is never something to be rushed, but especially not in the current economic climate.

Kinda. Its not a Megane with a boot though, its a different car in between the size of a Megane and Laguna. A lot of the exterior styling is similar to the Megane but the interior i.e dashboard etc is more Laguna.

Volvo offers ceased at the end of March but one dealer I spoke to seemed to think it would continue with similar offer.

Some decent pictures of the Fluence. Do not like the styling of this one bit, just looks so outdated compared with, say, the new Focus saloon thats coming next year

Volvo did announce a slightly better offer to the corporate section on the 1st April (the day after we'd rushed a reg through) so it should apply to consumers.

There is also a model and engine designation change in the pipeline for all Volvo models.

A bit O/T but I see that Volvo will soon have a 163 hp 2.0 D with 5 cylinders:), it's gonna be in the new S60 anyway(when I heard 163 hp 2.0 diesel I thought it was going to be the Peugeot 4 cylinder one because that now has 163 hp and is replacing their 2.2 HDi) and hopefully they will put it into the other models as well.

Hats off to Volvo for doing their own thing instead of taking the Ford 2.0 TD or the Peugeot 2.0 TD, now all we need is for them to make a 2.0 5 cylinder turbo petrol once again:)!

Citroen have introduced their scrappage / trade in offers which are available until the 30th June which means the 7 seat Grand C4 Picasso is just €25,100 on scrappage.

Thats not great to be fair. The Grand Scenic can be had from just over €21,500 in petrol and €22,000 for diesel with the scrappage. The top spec with sat nav and all the toys is less than €500 more than the C4 starts at.

Citroen were usually one of the better discounters.
