Structural Engineer Fees

I have just had my architect submit a planning application for a 2 storey extension to my semi-detached house in Rathfarnham, Dublin. He has advised me to engage a structural engineer to take a look at the plans as there are existing walls to be knocked down and some new steel beams to be incorporated to provide support to walls and floors above. The extension is 6.0m x 3.5m on plan.

Would anyone have an idea of how much a chartered engineer (with PI insurance) would charge for this service. My architect has passed the plans onto an engineer he knows. He is going to give me a price for foundation design, steel beams design and provide method statements for removing walls and installing steel beams. He will also visit site to carry out inspections at least 3 times and provide certification when the job is finished.

He is calling over to meet us early next week and I would like to have a number in my head before he give me his price. Thanks in advance....

    Hi there,
A very similar size extension and the roughly the same requirements led us to a bill of approx. E3000 for our structural engineer. This was about 2.5 years ago and location is D.16. If you need any further info on exactly what we got for the money let me know and I'll dig out the receipts!

As an aside, the engineer was recommended by our architect and I never shopped around for prices... Which I should have done in retrospect...

Thanks for the reply Geneval, I had a figure in my head of about €1500!:( I hope prices have become more competitive in the last 2.5 years. Did the engineer do your planning application as well for this price....well i presume your architect did this. €3000 seems a fair chunk of change for engineering work on a small extension.

If you could give me a break down of what each element cost that would be very informative. If this will take longer than a few minutes don't bother....I don't expect you to spend you whole evening on this or tear the house apart looking for receipts...

    Thanks a lot...

THanks lads for being alert, I got to this through Google and glad I read the whole lot!
Probably no wonder the chancer was made redundant.
