    Hi all

going to get my first iphone today from vodafone, ive had all manner of smartphones over the years, from winmo6, to symbian to symbian touch to android. of them all i enjoyed android the most and had my hero running a nice custom modaco rom.

however i always wanted to try the iphone and as im due an upgrade now seemed like a good time, ill be signing up for a 3gs at lunch time.

im not looking for a beginners guide or an explanation of how to do anything ill figure all that out myself, but i want to get the most out of the phone, while having a very stable usable device.

So, what do i want to do with the phone once i get it? is it possible to jail break the 3gs and is it recommended, what apps etc will i be able to run once i have jailbroken it? i may have heard that the current jailbreak solution requires you to re do it every time you start the phone is that correct?

    any other advice or tips?

Wait until June is the best advice. A major upgrade is due and you'd be nuts to signup for an 18mth contract with a refresh so soon away. (rumours include doubled screen resoultion, much faster processor, more storage, front facing camera for video chat, multi-tasking, etc etc)

In regards to jailbreaking it will always be a game of cat a mouse. AFAIK you can now jailbreak on the 3GS without having to tether for restarts. You can install any software (including pirated) that is available in the main iTunes store or the jailbreak stores such as Cydia.

I've jailbroken mine a few times for features such as tethering or custom themes but I prefer to use the standard firmware as I noticed my battery life was far less when jailbroken.

ah i only ever keep a phone 4/5 months or so, plus im sure it will be july august before the iphone 4 comes along :)

the 18mth contract has a 12mth upgrade clause aswell!

    Cyrus,
Your right , to open up the iPhone to its full potential then jailbreaking is the only way to go .
Only thing is your new phone will more than likely be running on firmware 3.1.3 which is not jailbroken (yet) .
On the question about the "tethered" jailbreak , yes new phones when jailbroken need to be hooked back up to a P.C and re-jailbroken after a reboot , GeoHot has released a video claiming to have resolved this requirement , a release date seems imminent , fingers crossed .
