Speculation that OFCOM is to force Sky's hand in the wholesale market is expected sometime today.

Id say it wont apply to the republic, Ofcom has way more powers in the Uk than their equivalent in the Republic.

It does have fundamental consequences for competition in satellite which could have an effect in Ireland e.g. Real Digital

Non-Related to the Sky V OFCOM , Sky have recently sent me a return to sky offer :- half price packages for 6 months ... I might have stuck with them if it was half price all the time.

Who knows the current market conditions might force them to cut prices here. Real Digital which I've only heard of recently could eat in to Skys Irish market, that said I don't no much of what's going to be available on it and if it's going to be lunched in Ireland. Irish DTT could also have some affect , Sky may decide to drop prices to kill off any competition before it even got started, they are ruthless competitors to be up against.

Slegs :- Any idea on Real Digital start date and if it's going to be officially available in Ireland ?

Ah so it has sorry mods.

This really only realates to charges that Sky make to other pay TV companies. They could continue to charge higher prices to UPC. The customer may not be effected as Virgin etc may retain their pricing structure but will have a larger margin :) £££££

Companies operating out of the UK serving Ireland will be covered under this. Real Digital have expressed an interest in launching a service in the UK (from the summer accoridng to reports) and from threads on digital spy have also mentioned Ireland. If they do then lowered wholesale rates will allow them to offer a more competitive package and shake up the market here.

Does this not just mean Sky will charge the likes of NTL less for sky sports.

NTL wont pass on the drop so just more profit for them?

I would assume that it does not apply to NTL/Chorus (aka UPC) since they are based in ROI. ???????

This may also mean the availability of sky sports HD on chorus here in the future! Sky are being forced to wholesale these too

dont hold your breath. chorus mmds customers will never be able to get HD or the recorder box as they are incompatable with the NTL system.

The ruling is only related to the price at which sky is allowed charge third parties for carriage of their standard definition channels. HD, unfortunately, is not included - even if the ruling was to apply here too :(
