No swimming pool, but we stayed in Hotel Frank just off Union Square this time last year, and thought it was pretty nice. The rooms were nicely decked out - a nice change from the standard chain hotels. It doesn't have that many amenities, but it's very central. We booked it through eBookers.ie.

Anyone know is it better to stay at fisherman's wharf or union square area's?

I would say Union square; you're closer to the centre of things. We walked back from Fisherman's wharf and there didn't seem to be much else in the immediate area.

I would second The Chancellor on Union Square, amazing location just opposite the cable car stop. It's a lovely boutique hotel and there are loads of little extras like a rubber duckie in your bathroom, a jar of sweets and an umbrella in your room. It's extra touches like that, that make it somewhere special to stay rather than just another souless chain. The brekkies are amazing as well, if you can get a rate that includes that and there's free coffee and cookies in the lobby every afternoon. I think I remember seeing a good price for it on www.quikbook.com

I would definitely recommend Union Square over Fishermans Wharf, FW is lovely, but gets very dead at night and is mega touristy. Union Square has much more going on and not as touristy.

I would 'third' the Chancellor hotel. It's literally step out the door and you're on Union Square. Stayed there in November 09 and loved it. The hotel's got something like 1,200 reviews on Trip Advisor and about 1,100 of them are a 4 or a 5 out of 5. That's why I chose it.

The rooms are smallish though so if you are looking for a big room don't stay there.

The breakfasts at Sears next door are amazing!!
