So I've been running for the past few months, every couple of days I hit up an old bog road near my house. I'm in my Leaving Cert. year and I'm just looking for a few tips, etc.

    1) I used to run after school but this became impossible after evening study in school when it would be too dark to go out. Does/do any of ye run before school/college/work? What routine works for you?

    2) What's the best gear? The weather's crap this time of year and I want to know especially what ye recommend for rain.

    3) What should I aim for goals and routine wise for general fitness? I tend to run for an hour every 2-3 days.

    Thanks for the help!!

Hey I'm in leaving cert too so i'll give ya some of my tips

I train after evening study too i just found a small estate and its a 1k loop run around that as there is lights there which help a lot but you might find the same loop really boring

Make Sat and Sun your main sessions as you got extra time (usually unless you have a few cans sat night then sunday is a disaster)

I used to run in the mornings just 15mins to clear my head for school and help recover from the previous sessions! I found it really helpful for school as your fully awake at 9 for school
A good athletics teacher thought me that and it did work but i couldn't stick getting up for training so early! But if you can try it just a few mins will help

Dont worry about the rain. Just go running with a jacket even if you get soaked through the skin hop in the shower

Set a goal and go after it! Half Marthon, 5k, 10k time whatever just things are easier with goals

    Good luck

I've been in college pretty much the whole time that I've been a runner - started running just before starting my final year of undergrad.

I'm a night runner by nature, I have no problem with running in the dark, even as late as 10-11pm if that's the only available time I have for a run. Be sensible with where you go, stick to well-lit areas, and be aware of your surroundings (This also goes for running on winter mornings).

If it's raining, just throw on a light jacket over your normal gear (there's a couple going for €9.99 in Lidl at the moment). You're going to get soaked anyway, but it really doesn't matter because you're just going to throw yourself into the shower when you get home.

In terms of goals - that's really up to you. Have you raced before?

    1. What's your lunchbreak like? I run twice during the week at lunchtime. Get 5k in, then shower and have lunch at my desk. Then do a longer run at the weekend.
    2. Any gear. Even in the rain stay with light gear. As cickimc said you'll be showering afterwards anyway.
    3. Goals are personal. Routine is important. My routine is Tues/Thurs/Sat running. That's about to change to Mon/Wed/Sat with fitness training on Tuesday evening and spinning on Thurs lunchtime. Then a brick on Sunday. You need to find your own routine - and stick to it.

For general fitness with no other goal - 30 mins/ 3 times a week will keep you fit. Anything more is for specific reasons such as racing, endurance, performance etc.

Firstly, I want to say fair play to you. I am near turning 36yo and I am running a little over a year. I now think to myself why did I not start this up when I was turning 20 or 25 or 30. Basically, all you younger runners have something us (slightly) older runners have not, and that's youth. So congrats to you and never take what you have for granted.

In relation to running in the cold, if you feel the cold wear the skin hugging 'underarmour' type tops and tights. If you don't like the rain then wear a light jacket. Enjoy it.

LC student too and it's killing me! Study and training don't seem to blend well I'd much rather run than study...anyone any ideas how to fit training and study into the same day?? Or how to motivate myself to get a bit of work done!?

In college at the moment myself with twice a day training and night shifts in work it can be pretty hard my advice would be as follows:

Commute - Try substitute you lift with a run. This worked for me living in dublin actually took the same amount of time. Now days i head into college early avoiding traffic run and have breakfast there after shower. Speak to a P.E coach i am sure if you explain they can let you in before class starts for a shower. It will leave you fresh for the day in school and actually hlp with the learning.

Make your schedule flexible - Change around your schedule if something comes up just save time for your session days and try to fit your runs in the other days. If you cant get out for long even do 20-30 min. Something is better than nothing.

Lunch - This can be ideal time to get a bit in. Like i said talk to a P.E teacher and try to come to some agreement more times than not they will be very accomodating.

LC is an important time and should be treated as so do a bit to get you through the exams and once they finish you can get back into proper training. Best of luck

    Another LC here.
Used to do all my running midweek either in school during athletics training or on the treadmill in the evening. Keep the weekends for your longer runs when you actually have some time.

Recently I've started doing morning runs with my neighbour. It means I have to get up at half 6 but if you wan't to get in some milage and do evening study it's proberly the best way to go about it. You HAVE to go to bed pretty early otherwise you'll be asleep in class the next day.

If you want to make a routine out of it plan your Long Run for Sunday with 2/3/4 sessions between the other 6 days. Google some plans to get a comfortable plan and don't increase your milage too much too quickly. I did and ended up effective injured for the last few weeks!

If you can get podcasts related to anything to do with your subjects it helps. Even record your own voice doing Sliochts or general conversation in your language. It's handy to get study an running in at the same time!

Well I have a Sony Walkman that can record so I just use that for my German and Irish. Haven't even thought of putting physics definitions on it like you said on the other thread.
