Laptop Freezing/not-reponding

    Hi,

I'm having problems with my laptop not responding and then it freezes.

I keep my hand on the power button for a minute until the laptop switches off and then I turn it back on.

I did try to turn it off properly (start > shut down / start > restart) but it doesn't work.

    Info about the laptop:

    DELL Inspiron 1525
    Windows Vista
Bought in Dec 2008 from pixmania.ie
The slot for the memory card is broken/damaged (my cousin got something stuck in it before and my mam used a knife/scissors/key to get it out, she didnt realise it a knife/scissors/key would damage a laptop, so she says ). Now I have to press/hold the card in the slot to get it to work.

Any ideas on what could be wrong? How to fix it?

Also, is it difficult to programme a computer? As I would like to install Windows 7, but not sure how difficult it would be.

    Thanks.

Just noticed the power table says

"94% available, plugged in, not charging" and it gives three options

    1) Balanced
    2) Power Saver
    3) High Performance (which is what is selected)

if you have problems with vista keep away from win 7

my advice is back up whatever you need onto an external drive

and do a fresh install of win XP

i dont know the spec, but id say its not great for vista.

mods: there should be a sticky on telling people how to back up their data onto external drives//caddies.

It should only take about 6 seconds holding the power button down to force a shutdown.
My local 2euro shop has USB SD-card adapters for, you guessed, 2 euro.
I'd personally wipe it and upgrade from Vista to XP.

    Hi,

    Thank you for your replies.

All evening my laptop has been freezing and turning itself on and off. An absolute nightmare.

Will try and get everything backed up asap.

I haven't a clue how to install Windows XP or to upgrade the laptop as I've never done it before, and I don't want to make it worse.

I agree it should only take a few seconds to force a shutdown, however it takes me/my laptop a minute, exactly, as I did time it.

If you have a decent BB net connection you might try downloading a live CD of one of the Linux distros, burn it to a CD, boot from it, and that way determine if its just a software problem. Maybe with your freezing issues, a download manager might be useful in the download process. The Opera browser can resume downloads that have stopped, maybe others too, like Mozilla, but I don't use that.

I think they don't officially sell XP anymore, but maybe you might find a copy ... I thought Vista had too much fluff included

    Hi,

    Thanks for the replies eveyrone.

I tried using my laptop today and again I had the same problem as last night, but now, when I turn on my laptop, it just shows a pink screen and doesn't do anything else.

Tomorrow (depending on the weather) I am taking it to a guy in town who fixes computers and see what he says.

    Hopefully it can be repaired.

Would Dell be any use to me even though I bought it from Pixmania? Would Dell be willing/able to fix it?

Currently, I am using my mothers desktop.

    Thanks

If you have a reciept and laptop has not been opened up you are covered for up to 6 years by pixmania, disregard the warranty.

Has to be a manufacturing fault, not that you dropped it.

    PM me for details.

    Thank you for this info.

The laptop has never been opened up and I have all the documentation from when it was bought.

    Will PM you now.

Does anyone have a contact email address for Pixmania please?

I turned on my laptop today and it tried to do a 'system recovery' and after it was finished it showed a little box/table with a list of things it checked, iirc, it also said something about a 'disk failure'. not sure what that means though.

I took pictures and a video of the box/table and am trying to get them on the desktop, but the pc isn't recognizing the memory card (it's an XD 2GB card), hopefully it will work soon.

    Thanks.
