ARE THERE NEW VRT RULES??

    Can anyone tell me are there new VRT rules when importing a classic from the UK?
    The boards Charter does say that a car over 30 years old does not pay VRT but just a regestration fee of €49
    I'm not sure but this could be incorrect.
    Anyone out there have the correct info please?

    Yes this is incorrect. :D
    It's not a registration, it's VRT, but it's a flat rate of €50 (not €49)

    I'm told there is a recent change to the old VRT rule as we know it.
    Seemingly cars after 1980 even when they become 30 years old will not qualify.???????????
    Any more info appreciated or mabey i have got it totally wrong

    No it doesn't ;)

    From the charter:
    4. VRT

    You don't need to pay VRT when importing a car if the car is 30 years old (from the first day of registration). A €50 registration charge has to be payed though

    This is still the case as far as I'm aware...

    the only change was that the NCT exemption was changed from 30 yrs old to cars first rge'd before 1980. No changes to the VRT or tax concession YET

    So does this mean that if i have a '82 Ford in my garage waiting for it to become 30 years old before i VRT it,i may aswell VRT it now?
    Nothing to gain by waiting.

    You should have VRTd your car within one day of importing it into this country, the rules are very clear. Your car would command the minimum VRT fee of €720. If it was classic (30 years old) it would only command the classic VRT fee of €50. So yes there's a good bit to gain by waiting. Waiting to import the car that is, not waiting to declare it / VRT it. The latter are both forms of tax evasion, which are illegal.

    10/10 Well done that man! :D You do pay VRT - in Category C

    The VRT rate applicable to Category C vehicles is a flat rate of €50.

    NCT is applicable to cars registered from 1st January 1980.

    Ignore below, unless you're interested in the minute detail :o

    VRT:

    Although it doesn't say in that Revenue material, the Section 130 of the Finance Act 1992, defines (in a roundabout way) that a "listed vehicle", is a Category C vehicle and that a: ""listed vehicle" means one of the following vehicles, namely, an ambulance, a hearse, a bus, a special purpose vehicle, an agricultural tractor, a two-wheeled tractor, a fire engine, a fire-escape, a road sweeper, an invalid carriage, an armoured fighting vehicle, or a vehicle (not including a motor-cycle) which is shown to the satisfaction of the Commissioners to be more than 30 years old at the time of registration"

    To satisfy the Commissioners that a vehicle is more than 30 years old (from Vehicle Registration and Taxation Regulations, 1992
    :"Section 9 (2) A determination shall be made by the Commissioners for the purposes of this Regulation as to the year in which a vehicle is brought into use and shall take into account any previous registration documents, the distance which the vehicle has travelled, and any other matters which are, in the opinion of the Commissioners, fair and reasonable in the circumstances of the case."

    NCT:

    The Road Traffic (National Car Test) Regulations 2009,
    Secton 3(5)(a) states (with effect from the 4th January 2010) that the regulation does not apply to a vehicle first registered prior to 1st January 1980.
    Section 3(2)(b)(i) states (with effect from the 1st June 2011) that from the tenth anniversary of first registration of the vehicle, a NCT will be due annually.

    nope.... i dont condone avoiding tax but the VRT concession is still there....
