I was thinking about picking up some radios too. The only thing that is worring me is compatibility with other brands.

Lads - I'm sure ye're aware of this, but in case you're not, you need to know what sort of connection the radio takes for a headset and to match that to whatever you're going to use.
Some radios take two pins, some a single pin. Also - if you're using something like a cavalry headset (see: http://shop.ehobbyasia.com/combat-gears/headsets/cavalvy-elite-ii-tactical-headset-tan.html) you'll need a headset wire with a send box (see: http://shop.ehobbyasia.com/combat-gears/headsets/cavalvy-u94-headset-wire-and-ptt-motorola-talkabout.html) and the pin between the headset and send box needs to match (there are two different types I've seen - and probably more that I haven't) as well as the connection between the send box and the radio.
I figured this out the hard way...

What kinda of range and how many channels are used in airsoft? milsim or others.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

Its all PMR so its 8 Channels with usually 32 subchannels.

If it doesnt come with a headset/suitable jack its not worth it. The Aldi ones we have, the TwinTalker 4710 DCP are great for 3 and come with a dock and a basic one ear headset.

    Why are headphones so important?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,397 ✭✭✭MerryDespot

Also - be aware of where you're going to use it. It may say 10 km range (or some other ridiculously optimistic stat on the website that's flogging the radio), but you can cut that down dramatically in any place thats wooded. I was using a motorola with a supposed range of 10 km in MAC yesterday and it was difficult reaching the carpark less than a km away! At one stage I was 'abandoned' by my team mates (not bitter though, not at all!) mainly because they'd moved out of comms range and I was snookered (and surrounded). But the same radio is perfect in places like Redbarn or Fingal where you've a smaller site and less dense woodland. Be aware of what you want - if you want long range and crystal clear clarity you will probably have to pay for it.
Those Lidl/Aldi radios are pretty good by the way - easily comparible to the Motorola P.O.S. that I was using yesterday.

    Scenario (1):

You're hidden in woodland overlooking an enemy group. Your group is outnumbered, but that's ok - you've got the drop on the enemy group. You're waiting for orders to attack (as until now your mission was recon only). You're nice and low, stretched out on the ground lining up your first target and you are prepared to switch to your second, third and so on. Your radio is tagged to the front of your kit (no headset) - you get the order to open fire, and all you can hear breaking the silence of the wood is "Green Light - take out the target" (or more likely something like "Right lads, Brap the feckers!"). Oh look - your enemy have just turned, dropped and commenced firing at you - you've now lost the advantage and you're getting nice red welts on your face for your troubles.

    Scenario (2):
Same as above but your incoming radio message is for your ears only and you give a hand signal to your mates to open fire - all tangos brapped nicely - thank you very much and good night.

Not an unrealistic scenario either in milsim - a variation of this took place at MAC yesterday.

You gotta know the poles too, different radios have the in/out/return configured differently. Some use 4 channel ones aswell. Whats the make/model?
