Meissen Porcelain Mirrors - Who to Sell?

First post here in Collectibles and Antiques, looking for advice.

I've a pair of Meissen Porcelain Mirrors that I want to sell. I know pretty much nothing about them, except that they were valued at £7,500 in 1985 when my father owned them.

Any idea which auction house would be best to sell them?

Any ideas on other ways of selling them (with the caveat that I'm a complete novice on these things)?

    Thanks all in advance.

Where are you and I might be able to suggest a good saleroom? In Dublin I would think that James Adams & Son, St.Stephen's Green would be your best bet. http://www.jamesadam.ie/. :)

    Thanks for that.

Adams is the only one I was familiar with.

I'm in Dublin most of the time so I can bring them in there easily. Would they be the best would you think?

Joe Mullen is another auctioneer with a high international profile, and very reputable, who might be worth checking out. A valuation should still be free as far as I know. Several of the antiques shops on Francis Street could be worth a call but dealers all seem to be reluctant to buy much at the moment - or pay a decent price.

    Mullen’s,

Any chance of a Photo !!

The Insurance valuation is maybe 3 times that they would fetch on the open market (auction) .

Many or even Most mirrors bearing the Meissen mark are from cheaper factories , and Sitzendorf copies are the worst ! these factories usually carry variations of the "blue crossed swords" mark.

I don't mean to sound pessimistic , but they would have to be really something special to be in the 7K bracket.

Try post a pic of the front and back , and mark !
Finger crossed you got something special Churchview

Picture of the front of one of them attached. I'll get a picture of the other and the mark over the coming weekend.

No need to apologise for being pessimistic. You're being realistic.

I imagine they may have come from Germany in the 1930s when my grandparents holidayed there, but I've no idea really.

    Hi Churchview,
    I think you're spot on about 1930's .

The best period for Meissen is the mid 18th century, late pieces really just live off the reputation and style.

Im thinking mid hundreds to be honest , but send a pic of them by email to any or all of the auction rooms !
They'll all want to get the best price as they work on commission ! although it is quite high @ 15-20% .

A hard lot to sell , as that Meissen/Dresden stuff is felt to be decorated O.T.T in todays fashion !

    Best of luck !

    Thanks WildDogger,

I see what you're saying about the OTT aspect. They're certainly not minimalist!

I've sent a picture to Mullens - waiting on a callback. I think I'll send it on to Adams too.

If it does turn out that they're only worth a few hundred I think I'll hang onto them; not worth getting rid of at that really.

Thanks all here for your help.
