    Hi all,

I'm trying to convert a couple of tv programmes I recorded which are in video_ts format to .avi format.

Just wondering what's the best mac program for doing this? Is it DivX?

    Are there any free programs?

Also, on average how long does it take to convert a one hour program?

    Thanks for any help.

    http://homepage.mac.com/major4/videots_divx.html

Encoding time depends on your machine really.

Thanks a mil. I'll give it a go later.

Out of interest, is there any difference between this program and Divx in terms of quality or speed?

I find handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/) pretty good for this job.

    Does handbrake convert to avi?

Says on the link it's only MP4 and MKV.

Actually MP4 is probably avi is it?

I'm not sure if you meant a .TS file (an mpeg transport stream file, as opposed to the contents of a DVD's ''Video_TS'' folder). If so this tutorial may be of help: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=149827

At point number (2) in the tutorial where it says ''Then go down to 'Format' and select 'MPEG-PS (A+V)'.''

    Select AVI instead, and voila!

Am trying to convert something I recorded from the tv. Want to keep it in .avi format.

The contents of the recording are in two folders - video_rm and video_ts and the files seem to be either .vob

Can anyone clarify if mp4 would be an .avi file?

Ah, right. Then its not a .TS file like I thought. I am pretty sure that an AVI is simply a container format. As a result it could use quite a few different codecs. Seeing as your program is in VOB format in a Video_ts folder I would guess it is in MPEG2 format (not MP4). How did you get your TV program into that format? MP4 is not an AVI.

Do you ask that because of Handbrake? Handbrake AFSIK only converts to MP4 and H264 but not AVI

You could try MPEG Streamclip or Avidemux to save your video_ts folder as AVI. I haven't ever done it so I'm not 100% how to do it, but I dont think it will be too difficult

Version 0.9.3 does - I see that the dev's have decided that avi is a broken format and dropped support.

I should have the 0.9.3 dmg and can email it to you if you want

Hope I'm answering the right question DMG is an image file - sorta like a installation file.

Drop me a PM with your email and I'll do my best to dig it out for you.

Mods - hope this is okay handbrake is open source

    DVD recorder.
Of course, I forgot about DVD recorders. I was thinking of a computer app.
What format/program does the best compression?

I would reckon the best compression codec to go is for H.264 (also known as AVC [and sometimes X.264]). Handbrake converts to that codec, (as do a lot of programs). Handbrake will allow you to save the converted program as a .mp4 file or .mkv file (container formats) but not AVI. Is it really that important to the file as AVI?

Handbrake is fairly easy to use so i would run with that.

http://www.doom9.org/ and their forum are good places to get info on converting video etc.

Update:If you find Handbrake is too complicated Lifehacker (who got it from addictvetips) were highlighting an app called Miro. it seems to be drag and drop so it may be easier to use . I have never used Miro, but Lifehacker is a reputable site so I wouldn't have any qualms about using it.
