Biting fingernails

Not so much of a PI but it's there for me and many others no doubt. And I did search before I posted.

For as long as I can remember I bite my fingernails. But what's worse is I pick and chew at the skin around my fingernails and peel back skin. Often times I end up bleeding. Writing this I feel disgusted but I don't even notice myself doing it.

Now let's not escalate this, this isn't some serious self harm post. But it's a bad habit and any tips to break it?

There's a lad in the office who does the same as me and I hate looking at him doing it but then I do the very same on the bus home!

I don't know if this would suit you as a solution but it worked for me. I started having my nails done professionally every week for a few months, with polish that could barely be seen. They looked great! Every so often I go back to biting but I can stop more easily now. If you're a lad, just get a manicure and file maybe. Though I think there's a polish you can get that's matte and can't really be seen.

I have a dreadful habit of doing this too. I managed to quit for a few years, then did a postgrad and the nerves got the better of me.
I think the key to breaking the habit is in making yourself aware you're doing it.
What worked for me last time was a product called Boots expert nail biting solution. Tis a green liquid and you can get it in most branches of boots I'd imagine. Now I'd tried a similar product years before and it didn't work, but this stuff, once painted on the nails will give a foul taste as soon as you put your mouth near your fingers. :D
    It is rank, believe me!

I must try it again and see if i can crack the habit!
Hope it works for you too.
