    it's Edge.

it's better than GPRS, worse than 3G.

    GPRS = blue dot

i presume edge is included in the 'unlimited' data that 02 have is it?

it is indeed so long as you don't change your APN all data that comes over the network will be included in your 'unlimited' data bundle.

ya can find the apn under settings > general > network > cellular data network,
the first one ya see should say apn internet, ya can change that but dont, leave it set as internet

if ya ever want to disable all internet activity on the iphone just add 1 or a to internet, then remove it again when ya want the net back

any particular reason ya have 3g disabled

    indeed n00b error, :D
no need to switch off anything, your phone will switch to your wifi automatically once its in range,
youll see the E/3g will be replaced with a picture of wifi bars like this15dopax.png meaning its connected

could be trying to conserve battery, any data transferred over 3G absolutely rapes the battery, even more so if you're in the middle of low 3G coverage / Edge coverage as the radio in the phone is constantly changing between cells.

this topic has prompted a question: is there an app that rounds up the following and makes shortcuts for them:

    bluetooth on/off
    wifi on/off
    3g on/off

sounds lazy but i use wifi in work and home and 3g when i've no wifi, and bluetooth for the car kit, which means i'm turning them on and off loads of times a day and its a tad tedious. if i left all 3 on i'd prob get a day out of my battery, just an icon for each on the home screen would be great.

have you got your phone jailbroken?

if you do, download SBSettings, it allows you to swipe across the top of the screen (where the clock is) and a menu pops down with toggles for almost anything (3G/Edge/Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/etc.).

if you don't have your phone jailbroken hope someone else comes along as suggests an app from the app store but i doubt there is one.

*EDIT* here's a picture of SBSettings.

    3g on/off
and you can easily add as many toggles as you want to sbsettings
its made of win ! go for it if you can !

and there is SBSchedule, which lets you schedule groups of toggles on\off at certain times, or manually do it...it's $2.99 i think
