    Heya Folks,

I've been bulking up for the past while since I was a a skinny fecker most of my life but I've started running recently too. I'm adding on an extra kilometre each week and using .25k walk / .5k run intervals using runkeeper on the iphone and I'm up to about 8.5k in 50 minutes now. I want to get a bit more distance in so I could look at a marathon towards the end of the year or possibly a triathlon at some point but I'm also doing mon / wed / Fri mornings in the gym concentrating on upper body weights stuff. Hal higdons plans seem to be based around 4 days of running each week which might not work - what would you guys recommend - just do a run on the tuesday and thursday mornings to leave 24 hours rest from each workout and sunday as a rest day after a long saturday run? If so would you do a short run tues, middle thursday then long saturday or is there a better method?

    Cheers!

    John

Bulking up and marathon wont go together i am afraid. While some distance runners do some weights these are for injury prevention or explosive power (this is more middle distance 8-1500m runners) if you were planning on working towards a marathon my advice would be medium run during week with long run at weekend to build up your aerobic capacity over the next few months before commiting to a full marathon training plan. Think of miles as putting money in an bank it will build and build for a big dividend at the end the key is to gradually build the distance

Better off starting with some 5 mile, 10k and half marathon distance races before you start planning your marathon (if you were starting out with weights you wouldn't jump straight to the heaviest weights first). Check out the events sub-forum for details of races in your area.

Much appreciated folks - I'll do the two runs from now on and see how I get on. Cheers!
