Sanitary products

As I've been buying various sanitary products from Always over the past few year I've recently decided to open my options!

I recently bought Tesco pads and my god talk about bad quality! Apart from being massive, they crumpled in the middle and literally had no absorbsion which all lead me to ruin a perfectly good pair of knickers! Yes they were a little (but not much) cheaper that my normal brand but apart from changing it 2-3 times in a day I now have to change the pad at least 5 times. So all in all Always 1 alternative brand 0.

Next month I'll be reviewing something from Bodyform and will hopfully get better results!

Anyone else care to share their experiences?

Had no money on me, was in Boots and had to use my almost empty Boots card. Got their silk ones. As good as Always, and they don't get hot like Always do, but they are a bit massive and crumply - that said, massive isn't always a bad thing! :o

I used scented bodyforms recently. They were really good, cottony and fresh.

Always are brilliant. I really think Bodyform are not great !

Kotex Nighttime were my pad of choice way back when I used to have exteme bleeds and although they're very chunky and feel a bit like have a lump of cotton wool between your legs, you really can't beat them on absorbancy and comfort. They're industrial strenght pads and whilst not great when wearing tight-fighting pants, I found them reassuringly absorbent.

Nowadays, I don't even need pantyliners. Mirena FTW!

Ick, pads. Are ye on about pads or pantiliners? Anyway how do people wear pads? They feel like nappies.

Dunno about pantiliners, never needed them.

VERY stupid question as I've been having periods for 10 years now but is there a difference between pads and pantiliners? I thought they were the same?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,691 ✭✭✭Lia_lia

^ Pads are for when you have your period, pantiliners are for when you don't.

Pantyliners are like smaller, thinner versions of pads can be used to keep you fresh if you discharge/sweat a lot, think they're used for mild urinary incontinence aswell.

Stopped using pads years ago myself, let my mum keep buying them for me as a teen even though I was buying myself tampons. She doesn't like tampons because they're 'dangerous' and they take your virginity away.

Tampons take your virginity away? Cool, as I've never used them I'm still a virgin so :D Cheers for the insights into pantiliners ladies ;)

I use Tampax tampons, I avoid the ones with the plastic insert like the plague!

I keep meaning to try the Moon cups.

I'm on the pill so I don't have 'real' periods and I love being able to run two packs together.

    Dianette FTW!

Glad you mentioned "real periods" Dr. Evil. I've been off the pill two months now and don't think I've had proper periods yet. The two that I've had weren't (thankfully) that painful and were pretty light apart from that one incident with Tescos pads!

My "real" periods in the past, although I would have considered them managable were definitely more painful and heavier. Plus I used to puke just once.

So, has my body decided to be nice to me and make periods a breeze or have they yet to return to "normal"?

Yup, quite a lot of us. There are a number of threads on them in this forum, if you use the search function you'll find them.

Boots used to sell a brand of natural tampons and towels called 'cottons' which were the business, but I haven't been able to find them for a while now :( I have been a mooncup convert for just over a year now though and I haven't looked back. I couldn't recommend it enough.

I used to use always nappies and hated them, then tried Tampax and loved them but then they started to hurt so I went back to the nappies.

Now Im on depo do get none at all :D

I use always and lil-lets lol. Not both at once.

I find it hurts a bit when I am taking the lil-let out (I'm a virgin). I want to try tampons, but when I did once, I couldn't get it in properly, it was half-out of me.:o

I don't know which one that was (was on holiday, my cousin gave it to me as my period arrived early and I didn't have they key to my room).

Can anyone recommend a type of tampon to try?

    Thanks!

PS: For anyone who uses always, Dunnes Stores have them on offer at the moment, 3 packets for €6.

I had awful trouble with tampons for years,it's only in the last few years i've been able to wear them.
I use tampax compact, they have a plastic insertor thing that pushes the tampon up.(i know someone above says she keeps well away from them, but they're the only ones which work well for me).
Everyone is different though,it'll be hit and miss till you find one that suits you.
Also what i used to do in the early days of wearing tampons was wear a pad too in case i didn't have the tampon in properly. Saved any accidents!

    Thank you.

I do wear panty liners 'just in case', but have been using lil-lets for almost a year now and haven't had an accident (that I can remember anyway lol, but if I did have an accident, I wouldn't forget lol). At night though, I do wear pads instead of lil-lets as I sometimes sleeps more than 8 hours (straight) and I read somewhere that lil-lets aren't supposed to be worn for more than 8 hours at a time. Whereas, when I'm up and about, I change the lil-let every 2hrs.

Took me about 6 months to get back to normal after stopping the pill, been off it now about a year and a half, have to say my period is pretty much the same as when I was on the pill, I reverted back to some of my old symptoms
i.e. Im allergic to my period, body cannot handle the hormone surges and dips, so used to get a bad flu the week before hence the reson for going on the pill in the first place. But since I stopped the pill the symptoms have returned but much more manageable, only really get sniffles now, unless I've had a really stressful month.

And on a major plus note the depression and manic mood swings have pretty much vanished. So its a win win for me at the moment! Never going back on the pill again!

Apologies for the slightly off topic post!

I used STs for about a year when I first started. Had Always at home but the school vending machine sold Dr. Whites which may as well have been incontinence pads!

My most recent encounter with pads was maternity pads, reminded me of being 12 again, hate them.

I have a mooncup which I'll be using whenever I get my period again.

How long do them things last for before you need to empty it?
Would they last longer than a tampon or pad?
I've heard of them, but don't know anyone who uses one.

I only ever had to empty mine before bed and in the morning. Depends on your flow but most people say 8hours minimum.

They last alot longer than than a tampon or pad, I could probably go a day without taking it out, if I wanted to that is! :p They are alot less likely to leak too.

Yep they are the best oncce you try them you'll never go back to nasty tampons of even worse STs euch.

Mooncups don't hurt when you put them in or out and you don't' get that icky dry feeling youget with tampons at the end of your period.

God I don't know how people wear pads, yeah to bed fair enough but during the day, yuck. Lillets all the way. While we're on the subject does anyone else find that Always add extremely irritating, "Have a Happy Period", WTF? I can honestly say never in my life have I had a happy period. Also while im having a little rant for myself does anyone else think it's crap the way some shops keep them behind the counter, cue mortification. I once had to buy them from a shop that does this at lunch time the place was packed and the woman serving says to me "don't eat them now sure you won't", seriously I nearly died

I've had my Mooncup for about 6 months now and I would NEVER go back to pads or tampons, it is the most amazing thing ever! I never thought having my period could be so easy. I empty mine before I go to bed, and then again when I get up. Takes a teeny bit of getting used to but is SO worth it. :D

True! Really, name one person who has had a happy period! I'm normally just happy if I don't puke :D Why would shops keep such items behind the counter?? That reminds me of a time I was in the chemist and the girl in front of my was buying condoms. She was talking to the assistent about something else and holding the condoms kinda behind her leg. Now, the aul one assistent was clearly not impressed and kept staring at them and eventually grabbed them out of her hand and gave her the the evil eyes! The poor girl was bright red!

Perhaps it's a happy period if you were worrying that it might not come at all and then you don't have to go back to the shop for a pregnancy test.

I emailed them to complain about the stupid slogan. Tbf, I never use pads and had only bought them because I was having a miscarriage so I was really in no mood to deal with such nonsense. They never got back to me.

Ooh that is definitely a big plus-i hate trying to hide tampons on the way to the loo in work, one of the lads will drag it out of my pocket one day thinking they're sweets or something!

Not sure if i'll be actually able to wear a moon cup,i've heard it's a bit difficult cos of certain things, but think next time i'm in Boots and have money to spare, will pick one up and try them out!

I don't see why you couldn't they are very easy to use, much more so than a tampon would be. Ooh and I just thought of another benefit, you can stay at people's houses, go camping etc and not have to worry about carrying pads or tampons around and always having to have a bin nearby. Gee I sound like an advert, but yeah - MOONCUPS!!! :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 83 ✭✭qwerty2

+ 1000000 for Mooncups! Cannot recommend them enough! I've been a Mooncup user for about a year now, and I can honestly say it is 100% worth it and I am never ever going back to tampons and pads! Not only is it more environmentally friendly, but also great for the purse strings (each one can last up to 10 years!!). Also, you don't have the pressure of having to carry spare tampons/pads/pantyliners in all of your handbags etc, all you need is your Mooncup :) I empty it twice a day - once when I wake up and once before bed and are completely safe especially compared to tampons! Mooncups ftw :D
