Thinking of buying a wider saddle

Have a narrow cycle with gel , think the gel has compressed over the last few years, so not terribly comfy

Thinking of buying a wider saddle with gel and springs/suspensions

Will a wider saddle chaffe my legs
Will springs reduce the power I put to the pedals

Have just returned to cycling so not training just coummuting 15k each way

    Unlikely.

It rather depends on what position you're riding in. Most long distance cyclists would have a fairly forward (but not racing) position, and the best way of getting comfortable in that position is with a fairly narrow, hard saddle which supports the sitbones and doesn't pressurise all the important squishy bits. This takes some getting used to, but 30k a day is a fair distance

The wide/sprung saddle approach is generally used for quite upright positions where you're sitting on your arse cheeks.
