is there any proven controlling drinking program anywhere. i do well on my own for a while then i take my eye off the ball and end up pissed and then the next day i go again and maybe 3rd day aswell.

What about this approach that I use when I want to cool it for a while...
I don't give up drink but instead I Tea Total for a while. "ah I'm just tea totalling for a while 'til I get a bit of weight off" I find in company people leave me alone or even support the idea. It also takes the self imposed pressure off myself by not giving up drinking.
When I get the goo on me for a gargle instead of focusing on not drinking I focus on another cup of tea until it passes.:)

Let me know if it works for you ;)
