Laptop battery issue

I bought a non standard battery for my Sony Vaio but it has never fully charged and every time I do a full discharge, it loses even more potential. e.g. when I got it first the charge got to 71% and now after multiple attempts at fully discharging and re-charging the full charge is only getting to 50%. Is there any way to recalibrate the battery and get it to full charge? Thanks!

this is due to the battery care software, you can set it to charge the battery 100%, 80% or in your case, only 50%...

I don't think this is the problem. Would that software even work on a non Sony battery? Also, the battery charge level keeps changing. Initially it was around 70% and then subsequent full discharges and recharges are actually reducing the max charge of the battery. I installed the battery care program but it's all grayed out when I run it. Any idea how to get it working? Cheers!

i really can only assume that you bought the battery recently, so it sounds like a dud battery, or a second hand one at least. any chance of a link to your vaio model or the 15 digit serial number off the back, and a link to the battery you bought?

it could most certainly be likely that you were sold the incorrect type of battery for your model, which might also explain why the software isnt working, although it wouldnt be beyond the bounds of possibility that the software detects an incompatible or non-sony battery and refuses to work.

It's a VGN-FE11M and the battery is a replacement for the VGP-BPL2 Sony battery. The serial number on it is *PQR0703YDC*

If it was a dud or an old one then it probably wouldn't hold the charge well but it does seem to hold on to the charge ok, just isn't fully charging.

Have yet to see a non standard battery that works correctly in any laptop. A lot of people do not realise that the laptops and batteries are configured for each other, and most non standard don't have the same configurations, only match the wattage, voltage etc.
Most start to loose their full charge after a few weeks and have very short life spans compared to the originals.

it certainly seems compatible, but as tony just pointed out there (i didnt realise this either, thanks tony!), there may also be other factors that affect the battery charging capacity. i didnt realise the laptop was that old either, originally shipping with xp media center edition! :o
