Query about overseas census

Does anyone know whether British Army personnel stationed overseas had to fill in census forms at the same time as everyone else?

So for example, if you were looking for an ancestor in a regiment that you knew was serving in India at the time the census in Britain and Ireland was taken in 1901, would they have had to fill in forms at the same time or would they be included in an Indian census, if and when such things were taken?

And if there was an Indian census, or even a census of British administration and military personnel in that country, how accessible would it be?

    Yours curiously, etc etc

I don't actually know for sure but as India was in the British Empire, it seems likely that they would have conducted a census there in 1901 too (at least of the British personnel).

Wikipedia says there was one in 1901. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Census#India

However, army personnel on UK/Irish 1901 census forms are usually listed with only their initials but other details are given, so if you knew where your person was posted, you could work out who he was on the form for the barracks.

The best bet for further advice would be to ask on Rootschat's forum for misc. countries which deals with India.
