I work for one of the main insurance companies in the country.
I work in the IT department and today my colleague was testing a special batch job sent up to him by one of the programmer's in our Development team.I was asking him what exactly the batch job does and he told me that
it will make a list of all polices that are insuranced with us in the Republic
that have foreign registrations. These details will then be transferred to the
the revenue. We're only in the testing stage so far but there are thousands
of polices showing up with UK and EU registrations.
I'm sure all the other insurance companies have been advised to do the same.
It was only a matter of time before something like this was done because of the millions lost in revenue.

But this "revenue" you speak of is money for our country... so you are identifying people stealing from us!

That is good work... not a "warning" surely???

But don't you have to have a valid Irish Tax cert to get a motor insurance policy?...and you can't get one of those without an Irish registration? Am I missing something here?

Depends on what way you look at it. It's a warning for everyone that wants to dodge tax and good work for everyone that pays it. Not everyone is honest.

keep up the good work !!

    - I've seen far too many nordy registered SUVs/Mini's with teenage girls and "soccer moms" driving around in Dublin.

(possibly jealous of the fact they can afford a fancy shiny car - I drive a 2003 Ford Fiesta Van)

No.. I guess the system was intended for visitors on extended stays... but guess what.. every toe-rag and knackbag abused it!

No, you can call up & they will insure uk reg cars 'temporarily'. The government have forced the insurers to send them this info & its an unusually good idea from this government.

Surely this would be a breach of the Data Protection Act?
The information given to the insurance companys was not collected to be given to a third party.

Tax evasion over rides Data protection they already have to do it for some other insurance policies, I see no problem with this.

The Gardaí can already contact your insurance company to verify you are insured correctly. All this is doing is allowing the revenue an easy way to id tax fraud and go after the money. I'd rather they do this then add any more to motor tax or fuel.

I don't think that applies in cases of revenue collection.. also not disclosing it would be similar to "be party" or concealing a crime.

Your bank has to disclose the names of Credit Card holders for example so the Government can collect stamp duty.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

SECTION 106 - RETURN OF MOTOR INSURANCE PARTICULARS

Section 106 inserts a new section 142A into the Finance Act 1992 which provides for the introduction

of a requirement for a return of information to the Revenue Commissioners by a vehicle insurer who

issues a policy in relation to a foreign registered vehicle for a period in excess of 42 days.

New finance act came into force at the start of last month. Your company is a bit slow, OP ;)
