noise from DA7900

    hi all,

Bike is approx 2 weeks old. I cannot get rid of the noise - its driving me mad. Link below to the youtube vid will show it better than I can describe but it happens in all gears but is more noticeable in the 50 / 25 combination. The noise when riding is louder than on the video.

When turning the crank arms backwards I can hear the odd "clunk" - chain also gets a small bit of vibration.

The alignment of both the rear and front derailleurs looks ok to me and I have no problems changing gears etc.

Any ideas? Could I have a buggered chain? I have had this noise from the very start.

    Thanks for the help!

50/25 is not a usable gear. Google cross chaining. From the Shimano tech docs:

Thanks Dirkvoodoo, I know about cross-chaning and dont crosschain when actually cycling. The noise occurs in every gear combination but is more noticeable the tighter the chain which is why I selected that combination for the video.

Your video seems to be private. I'm not sure why you are putting it in 50/25 to make the noise worse, whatever it is will be covered up by the chain rubbing across the rear cassette.

Do the gears shift up and down properly? I would have guessed that more than likely your bike, being new, is just experiencing cable stretch. The stretched cables are messing up your indexing and causing the chain to rub against the next/previous cog when in a certain gear. It's a simple matter of tightening up the cables again if this is the case.

you should be able to see the videos now. Shifting through the gears is perfect, and the chain to me looks like its hitting each gear dead-centre.

Can see second video, dog doesn't seem to like the noise either.

Can you put up a video of shifting through the cassette, quickly like click...click...click...

Still can't see first video though, do I need to be logged in to youtube or something? You should try embedding them in your post using the youtube tags, much handier.

ok, have changed the links using the youtube embed tags so hopefully that will fix that. I will work on getting the gear change vid.

    thanks for the help

Can't really make out what chain you are running but is it the new Dura Ace CN7900 chain?

Edit: Looks like you are running this chain(or cn6700) and it looks as if installed the correct way.

It is taxman, it has the quick-release pin too..

Only thing is the quick-release pin seems fine, doesnt seem to be sticking or popping when passing over the cogs. Some links on the chain definately seem to be not seating right though.

Take a close look at the rear derailleur/cassette/chain and work out which bit is making the noise. You'll probably be able to see something jumping around.

First thing to check is obviously that the chain is centred on the cogs, so that it's not jumping up or down gears.

But if I had to put money on something it'd be the b adjustment screw. What's the clearance like between the cassette sprockets and the jockey wheel?

I had a very noisy DA drive train from new. First off I had the chain on wrong(yes folks you can install this chain the wrong way) turned it the right way but things still felt rough. Took chain, cassette and cranks off the bike, cleaned till like new, gave chain a good proper lubing link by link and when re-installing the cranks I did it to Shimano's exact word rather than the tax mans way of installing cranks. Noise was from me installing the cranks poorly and the chain line was ever so slightly off so the chain would always jump a bit when making contact with the teeth.

I've also read of people having problems with the quick link and dumping it for a standard pin.

    Great DA7900 setup video.

I have the same problem, nothing seems to be rubbing but the chain is noisy, seems to hit the cogs right but is still noisy. Go used to the noise but it is annoying!

thanks for that setup vid taxman - reckon I am going to dismantle and start again with my setup tomorrow. If its still making the noise I am taking it in to the lbs for a check over.

I had a 7900 chain, lasted about 3 weeks. The quick link was making noise. Buy a KMC.

giving up for this evening, but have the chain off, degreased. Wiggled each chain link, did have a few stiff links in there. Checked the alignment of H & L screws. Will leave the b-screw and the rest of the trimming for tomorrow morning...too tired

can I ask what was the KMC model you replaced your chain with? Seems to be a couple of 10 speed options. thanks

well, took the bike into the lbs for a once over. They reckon the drivetrain noise is normal enough for a drivetrain that has not been worn in..

reckon I might still try the kmc chain to see if it helps
