My new iphone just arrived. I am trying to put my existing sim in and it wont work. Do I need to put the new sim in and not my existing one? I dont want to lose all my contacts etc.
    Thanks

does it actually see the sim and say anything like sim not recognised
but i'd say put in your sim and connect it to itune it might need to unlock itself as most iphone come locked and apple unlock them the first time you connect it to itunes just takes a minute to do

I'm setting up a few iphones for users here and also received SIM cards with them, they are described on the delivery docket as "Generic SIM" so I assume they are just for unlocking the phone as you need a non-protected SIM for that.

The users already have existing itunes on their home machines. Would it be best for them to activate the phones on their home machines and sync with that itunes first day?

You have to activate the phone while connected to iTunes via your computer. You need to create an iTunes account in order to register the iPhone too.
It's Apple's way of ensuring it makes it as easy for to part with your money for Apps & music.
