Dilemma over temporary public sector job

I've been offered an 11 month contract as a temporary clerical officer but it would mean relocating (back to where my family live, where I also lived when I joined the panel) and quitting a permanent job that is more poorly paid. The upside is that I would save on rent and bills and have a better basic salary than I do now, the downside is that it's an 11 month contract and I'd most likely be out in the cold once it ended.

What's drawing me in is the money and I know there are people who would grab the job with both hands, but the security of my permanent job isn't something I'm sure it's a good idea to give up. Not to mention moving back in with my parents :o

In the current climate would I be mad to do it or mad not to?

If you think your current job is secure, then I'd hang onto that with both hands. You're unlikely to get rich in it, but you won't go broke either. Be thankful you have a stable job, and ride out the recession there !

    Just my opinion/what I'd do

I turned down a perm job for a tco position in revenue. The contract was for 9 months. Worst decision I ever mind. As the person above said its all about job security. A TCO job there is no chance of it becoming permanent. It might be extended but eventually your going to be out the door. When this happens you will be kicking yourself that you didnt stay in secure job.

If I was you I would hold on to the secure job. I have been a T.C.O 3 times now...sometimes if you very lucky your contract will be extended but you will NEVER be made permanent. If you dont mind me asking, is the job with the civil service or the council and what county is it?...just asking as im on temp and permanent panels for both wexford and waterford civil service but was told all panels were frozen due to recession.
