Clutch or gearbox problem?

    Hi everybody,

    I'm having a strange problem with my car. It's a Hyundai Coupe 2.7 V6 with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

When I'm downshifting from say 6th to 5th or from 5th to 4th, etc, sometimes the gear stick offers resistance to come out of the current gear. It feels as if the clutch is not disengaging from the flywheel. In fact, when I force it out of gear, I do feel a slight "crunch" under my clutch pedal. The subsequent movement into gear goes fine ... no crunching at all.

I took the car to the dealers and he seemed to think it was the synchros in my 'box. I'm not convinced for two reasons:

    - It happens downshifting from all gears.
    - Upshifting is silky smooth 100% of the time.

Strange thing is, if I'm braking and going for a downshift, but I give the throttle a slight blip *before* putting the clutch in, the downshift is perfect. Almost as if I reverse the torsion on the clutch/flywheel before dipping the clutch.

I'm thinking of taking the car in to the RedCow gearbox guys and letting them throw their expert eyes over it, but has anybody else experienced this, or heard of this?

I've replaced the clutch slave cylinder, flushed and replaced the system with fresh brake fluid and bled the system fully. My next thoughts are with the master cylinder.

    Any ideas anyone?

    Al.

I take it this is not a common problem then. Hehehehe.

No bother. I'll post here if I get to the bottom of it.

Could it be the clutch cable?, maybe there is moisture inside it causing the resistance. It would be cheaper to check that first before looking at a new cylinder. Sometimes a specialist forum or owners club can offer more insight into these problems. http://www.hyundaicoupeclub.co.uk/

Yeah, I haven't checked the clutch pedal mechanism. I'm not sure if there's a cable involved.

I have posted on http://www.newtiburon.com (which is a Hyundai Coupe forum in the US). Surprisingly enough, most of their coupes are manual. I thought that was the exception rather than the rule over there.

Anyway, one guy suggested that when I had my clutch changed (about 20,000 kms ago), I probably should have got the flywheel done as well. And that sometimes the flywheel can become unevenly worn and may "capture" the clutch in certain circumstances. It would certainly explain what I'm experiencing. It's a theory anyway.

I'll have a look on that UK coupe forum.

Thanks for the info Hal1. Much obliged.
