    hi

first off i wasnt sure where to post this question so im postin it in a few places and hoping that someone would be able to help me.

anyways im headin off travellin to the middle east and africa in the next few weeks and i need to know the best and quickest way to purify water for drinking. i know boiling and types of filtering would be best but i know that i wont be able to that all the time and i have read about iodine tablets and chlorine-based halazone tablets. which one of these would be the best?? one outdoor camp shop said that i shouldnt use iodine as its dangerous and another shop told me the complete opposite........so any help would be great

    cheers

Hi, I cant think of any other method to purify water other than the methods you mentioned, however I use to use the tablets, but I would not use Iodine unless I was in a life threating situation where I would be forced to use it. Shops are gonna tell you that anyway as they want your money.

If your going into the desert then the best thing you can buy is a Jerry can that you often see people use for petrol. fill loads of them with water, but then again if you dont have a jeep and are off buy foot, that would not be a good idea and very energy consuming.

there is lots of UV in sunlight, I've seen a way of using natural light to filter water can't remember where the link is, but it don't need to use electricity,

or unless it's really rural you could just buy bottled water

Hey OP, I go hiking regularly. Not sure why you could't filter water even if it's already bottled. I have a portable water filter with pump and it fits in your pocket if needs be. If the filter has a 0.22 micron pore size anything coming out is going to be sterile. I work in the pharma industry and this a standard sterilisation technique used for injections/drips etc. It might not take out dissolved metal or mineral but its bugs you probably want to get rid of. Check out some of these
