They reckon this protest is on biblical grounds. I think it smacks of sectarianism, and proves the view thats its a backward group of biggots.

Imagine if we Roman Catholics made the call that the chief Imam world wide was to be the subject of protests if he were ever to visit Ireland.....thered be an absolute s hitstorm.

I don't think the pope would be all that welcome here either, considering recent events.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,515 ✭✭✭✭admiralofthefleet

fair play to them, i would be right behind them.

the leader of the worlds most dangerous and evil cult should be arrested and tried for covering up crimes against children

Of course they are protesting, he is the leader of a pedophile ring.

I find it funny you call them backwards biggots, but when it comes to them wanting to do a march in Dublin, the place gets wrecked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 374 ✭✭Stargazer7

Sectarian or not, it's hilarious that they're using "biblical grounds" as the reason for protesting his visit...would the whole child abuse scandal not merit "unholy" grounds for them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,345 ✭✭✭landsleaving

If their reason for protesting wasn't 'biblical' and was based on current events then I wouldn't complain, but one Christian belief protesting another seems fairly spiteful to me.

thats not fair...outta respect...theres so many devout catholics in ireland who still look upon the Church in reverence...what was perpetraited by a tiny minority shouldnt be allowed destroy the beliefs of those that still hold thier faith in high esteem.

I love this "tiny minority" malarkey....if we look at the figures was it really that tiny? Not only in Ireland but internationally?

Also, the issue is not with the faith or even the beliefs that the church holds, it is the failure of the church to address the hurt and suffering that they have caused and their general arrogance when it comes to moral authority.

Also, I agree with respect for everyone and a belief system...provided it doesn't hold prejudiced views on other people...let me see...the church has issues with Gay people, people who use contraception, have marriage out of wedlock, have abortions and generally anyone who decides to question what they are doing in any way.

All I know is that there are people out there like my MIL and my grandfather who are church nuts...they go to mass every day and base their whole lives around the teachings of the church in order to live how jesus would have wanted...these are the scondary "victims" of the Murphy inquiry...people have forgotton about this group....yet still to this day they are un-wavering..they believe in their faith and truely believe that it was a minority committing the crimes.

The Pope should make the head of the Orange Order an honorary archbishop.

If you ask me, I think Catholics should join the orange order in protest against any planned visit by the Pope. He have some cheek coming here after the wonderful legacy his church has left to this nation.

You see the real reason these people go to mass every day is because they're scared shiitless of spending eternity in hell.
In my experience a lot of fanatical churchgoers are hypocrites who live far from the teachings of thier faith.

Those lowlifes arent part of an organised grouping who make claims to repersent a cross section of a regional society like in Northern Ireland.

But its not a tiny minority is it.

Yes a a few preists rapped and abused the children, and then bishops hide the crime, and so on and so on. Right the way to the top to the Pope.

They might not of abused them kids but they are just as guilty.

He's not talking about all of them...

I'm not a fan of the Orange Order, but it would be hypocritical of me to condemn it for this, given the many revelations not just of recent months, but over the past 15-ish years. Plus, the spokesperson said it's not a go at practising catholics but at the pope and the institution that is the catholic church.
I suspect any outrage over this down here among non practising catholics (and indeed critics of the catholic church) is more to do with this being a protest by loyalists against the head of the church that the majority of Irish people are members of, rather than a general objection to sectarianism. I doubt there'd be an issue with, for example, protests by Zionist groups against the pope paying a visit to Tel Aviv.

To call them victims is quite over the top IMHO. Yes, I understand where you are coming from but it isn't up to the rest of us to make it up to these followers, that is the church's job. And so far they have done nothing really to redeem themselves in this mess. And while they may be unwavering and have a belief that it was just a small few, they may have to step out of the comfort zone of the church teaching and actually question things. I doubt it would do them any harm. Most of us have to do it on a daily basis on other things, why should religious followers be exempt from this?

The thing is the child abuse is just the tip of the iceberg it's the worst thing they've done (recently). It's the most recent in a long line of disgusting atrocity's the church has committed. They've been destroying people lives throughout recorded history, what about all the single mothers they turned into slaves? What about the children that escaped sexual abuse but got daily physical abuse from priests and nun's. The whole organisation breeds horrible people.

TBH...you have to know a person like my MIL and GD and how they go on to really understand the hurt and anguish they are feeling at the thoughts of the obvious betrayal and deceit that occured...

Anyway..i think we're off topic here. the thread was about the views held by the O.O under "biblical terms", that any visit by the head of the Catholic Church, should be protested against!!!!

My Grandmother was the same and my mum would be to a certain extent. While she finds the atrocities committed appalling she still cringes at criticism of the church. I know for older people it is a comfort to them and trying to convince them otherwise at this stage of their lives is probably going to cause more hurt than it's worth.

However, if we keep this view for everyone then nothing's every going to change. We have to start somewhere, not continue the mindless following of what the church says regardless of how horrific their actions are.

But yes, it is a bit OT. Though like I said, the O.O. have their priorities all wrong IMO, clinging on to ancient beliefs and reasons to cause conflict rather than addressing the real issues.

They may be a backward group of bigots, but they're entitled to protest, even if it is for some 16th century hocus pocus reason.

They can have a nice joint protest on the same day as the gays.

Of course, because while it is frowned upon to criticize any religion, regardless of how merited it is, Islam mustn't be even mentioned of threats of violence will be used. And people still wonder why atheists and agnostics are so pIssed off at the position of religion on our society.

It's almost akin to school rivalry. People in the real world are looking on thinking

"What does this have to do with anything that matters in the real world?"

    And they'd be right.

I find ignoring a problem makes it go away.

*Or maybe....someones else deals with it....no...don't ruin the bliss.*

    Bigots vs paedos.
