I was informed yesterday that I could attend any FETAC-certified photography course, but I'm having trouble picking one out. Would anyone here have suggestions for anything from the advanced courses? :)

Thats the course i'm currently doing. I have loved the course so far, the standard this year has been really high too. Isn't it a bit far from galway though?

The Photography aspects of the course are great. You get challenged in all areas.

The other modules that have to be done can be very tedious. Communication, Start Your Own Business and Art History can be quite time consuming when your trying to do one of the photographic assignments. And for some reason all the deadlines seem to fall on top of one another lol. Though if you keep on top of the work its not too bad! Theres also a link scheme with Coleg Sir Gar in Wales. Once you pass the course in O'Fiaich you are accepted into the degree programme in Wales.

    Awesome! :p

Anyways, if your interested in the course i'd look into applying soon, the first set of interviews are in mid-may, I know a few people have been given their time & dates for it so far.

The first few weeks of the course is all basic stuff too, t'is a bit mundane and slow, but it only lasts about 2-3 weeks. then its all go

Fair play. What is the cost associated with this course?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 192 ✭✭dan759

€180 course fees at the start of the year. After that its not much. Just materials like USB keys, Hard-drives, CD roms, Folders and notebooks etc.

If you have a DSLR then your sorted. If not theres some Digital Compacts they give to people. Also theres a laptop available on loan for each student on the Photography course.

Besides all that theres the odd assignment that you need to print your images for, but thats rare and usually only costs about 14-20 euros anyway :)

If I were you I'd be aiming for a Fetac/Hetac level 6 or BTEC HND tbh. It's the equivalent of 2 years of a degree, and you can then cross into one at an advanced level if you want (that's what I did). I have a feeling you'd feel a bit unchallenged in a level 5.

My thinking is more along the lines that I could stand to learn about organization, portfolio arrangement and maybe more of the technical side of photography, something all of the above courses seem to offer. I know where I stand creatively and technically, but I've found that most of this is instinctual; my goal is to be able to articulate what I know in a meaningful and constructive way. I mean, I can look at a given photo and know how it was composed, photographed and processed, but to verbalize any of this is beyond me.

Check out Marino College in Dublin, if you want to come to the big smoke :D

I did a different course in that college and ended up becoming more interested in photography, now I am studying it full time, however I basically did the course there as a bit of extra-curricular activity. Definitely recommended ! ! !

I really like the History and Theory part of the 2 year course in St. Kevin's. You will pay far less to do the diploma there then you would in other places.

The second year students have there final exhibition in the civic offices in Dublin on the w/c the 10th May. Come and check it out and speak to the students, you will get no better recommendations.

It is in the main foyer of the Civic Offices. They usually have a reception evening. I will get the full details from college.

There are all types of photographers from sports to wild life to fashion. You are free to do what ever style of photography you wish to explore. The tutors help you cultivate your ideas.

We are even encouraged to use RAW and I have heard some places don't allow RAW. Black and white processing is also covered.

I do as a friend went to it and he left soon after he didn't have much freedom of expression and he is an amazing photographer. It was the head of the course that didn't want RAW. That may have changed now, as digital is the way forward. Hence I picked St. Kevin's.

from my limited knowledge - the Sallynoggin course is pretty good

    http://www.scs.dife.ie/COURSES-photography.html

but with your experience the IADT would be more suitable but thats a degree - 4 years

To anyone who was interested in the O'Fiaich Photography course. We're holding our end of year exhibition on Tuesday the 4th of May at 8pm in the main building of DKIT.

Its a good chance to come along and see the kind of work the comes out of the course.

Had my interview for their photography course their the other week. It's a bit strange as it's a second level and third level school, so their's lots of teenagers about. but it's not that bad at all really. It's well maintained and they have their own darkroom and all too. It's not in a bad part of Crumlin either, well it didn't seem bad when I was there at all. Mind you though it's only 10 minutes on the bus from the city centre and the bus stops are no more than a two minute walk away in either direction. Looking forward to starting there in September!

I think they just got a load of new equipment in. Can't remember where I heard that though - may have dreamt it :D And I'm from down the road originally - the area is grand.. the secondary school has a bit of a rep, but sure you're a grownup :)

Cheers for reply guys. I was studying photography down in sallynoggin this year but i had to leave early cause i couldnt afford it even though i was working two jobs. And that wasnt because the course was expensive but because i had other expenses to take care of. So if anyone is wondering what sallynoggin is like its an unreal course. i missed prob half the course because of work but i learned sooo much and joe is great fun and very understanding, I really hate the fact i couldnt finish it. I might try the fetac course in st johns in cork cause that looks really goo. anyone done that course?
