    Hey,
Looking to get a server. not sure which one would do. Want to connect it up a network, and install sage act on it, a databasing program so that several people can access the program on it. What type of server would i need to get. What type of OS would i need? Would it be difficult to set up? I'm only willing to spend €500. Any help would be appreciated.

Tough budget to meet if you want a traditional server spec'd machine with a Windows server OS (I'm assuming act won't run on linux).

It'll hinge on how many "several" people is. If it's more than 10, you'll need to have a proper server OS - Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition.
If it's less than 10, you might get away with using a normal desktop computer, and a Windows desktop OS - if the requirements for ACT mean that it has to be installed on a server OS.

I'd spend a little bit on something so that you have a decent back up though.

Sage Line 50 is not a client server application and only uses the server to store files, so a server running Linux with samba shares is a reliable option.

Old thread from Samba mailing list (successful deployments, no issues):

If you opt for Windows, this is worth a read:
