Does buying from Canaries count as EU

Tried to ring the customs to find out if i'd be charged import duty on something I'm buying from a retailer in the canaries, but they're not answering their phones due to "industrial action" :mad:

Anyone any experience of this or know what the story is ?

Page 161 says no you will not excluding the standard alcohol, tobacco etc.

It says that the Canaries are excluded as territories of Spain, which means anything you buy is subject to duty and VAT, with the usual exemption of €22. VAT is not included on purchases there, unless the site you're buying from says otherwise.

Be very careful if buying photographic equipment in the Canaries as the place is literally stirring with con men and scam merchants. I would go so far as to avoid buying any electronics at all out there. The Canaries are classed as outside the EU like the channel islands and you can get hit for vat bringing items back into the EU from there.

I would agree with this. Hubby and I got caught a couple of years ago and paid way over the odds for a digital camera. My advice would be that if you haven't actually ordered it yet - don't. Shop around for prices first.
