Remember when you were young and didn't care about anything?! Then in college you notice people who can be a bit sticky on certain things. Well at what point and where do people come from who get all up on rules and regulations?!

Started a thread in the Galway forum about a bus driver who wouldn't let me off at a stop as it wasn't an official one but there is a bus bay there, he was stopped for a red light and people get off there all the time.

    A lot of the responses go on;

    -it's the law
-expressway buses can't, regional ones can
-you shouldn't distract the drivers attention
-why would you get off at a major intersection
    -passenger safety comes first
    -insurance
    -would you risk your job
    -etc.

Is it just me or does the whole situation stink of "the man"?!

"DUDE, THE BUS ISN'T MOVING -PEOPLE ALWAYS GET OFF HERE. LET ME OFF!"

You asked to get off, and he said no.

    Get over it

I don't care - I have a car. When I want to stop somewhere, I hit the brakes.

I've never heard someone describe a bus driver not letting them off between stops as an expression of the encroachment of a autocratic government into the inalienable rights of man before.

It seems to me that other people just want to get home on time.

Picture the scenario... He obliges you, and then five other people see the door opening and decide that they want to get out too. Meanwhile, the lights turn green while they're rummaging around in the luggage bay. Everyone else, including the traffic behind, gets pissed off.

If I was there and he let you off I would have karate-chopped the driver in the neck, grabbed the wheel, spun across the traffic, over the embankment into the oncoming traffic and killed everyone in a firey ball of death.

Is that what you wanted to happen OP? Is it? Cause that's what happens when drivers let people off when they're not supposed to!

What you do is press the little red button over the door. SFA they can do then.

Yes they are, people always give out about others when they are breaking the rules, but make exceptions for themselves when they do. Notice how every other driver is either a lunatic aor a snail?!

People are hypocrites. Boards.ie is populated by many of them.

I remember when I was in school the bus driver would let you off the bus at a red light or when they were stopped in traffic and then all of a sudden they stopped and would only let you get off at stops.

I assume its because something happened or there was an accident.

It's probably because at some stage some poor hapless but well meaning bus driver let a person off at an unofficial stop and they tripped over or got clipped by a passing cyclist and they sued the bus company and got the bus driver fired. Now how is he supposed to feed his kids???
It's our crazy litigious society that's ruining it for the rest of us more so than the sticklers.

Fair play to the Busdriver OP. One of the problems with this country is that everyone thinks they can decide which laws/rules are worth adhering to and which are not. Worse still te breaking of these rules never even has any social progess dimension to it either. It's invariably just for "mé féin".

I think there's a general petty lawlessness that runs through Irish society and that it undermines us somewhat as a nation. OP, If you've a problem with bus-drivers not stopping where-ever the hell feel like getting off and you want something done about it then why not take it up with the relevant transport authority.

No, it would be a movie where Steven Seagal was helping an old buddy out by driving his bus for the day, and kicking 7 buckets of sh1te out of anyone trying to get off in the wrong place.

Yeah, way to blow **** out of proportion, man. If this country's lawlessness was just a few people wanting to get off the bus when it stops at a red light, I'd be pretty happy. I guess it only starts there though, pretty soon the OP will be running a global crime syndicate and killing children.

I actually agree with the bus driver in this case. Years ago I was getting off the bus for school, and the bus driver was stopped in traffic around 30 metres from the bus stop so he opened the doors to let me out. I stepped out and landed ontop of a cyclist with everyone on the bus looking at me. The cyclist I landed on wasn't hurt, but she wasn't happy either. Very embarressing.

What this site needs is some sort of vetting process for new threads. That way garbage like this wouldnt need to exist.

Scarleh! Cyclists can come up anywhere -even at designated bus stops. Just gotta watch out for them!
